Kohler Design Forum: A Discussion on “Experiential Luxury”

The annual global event tackles design trends and concepts

Global leader in kitchen and bath product design Kohler paved the way for the first Kohler Design Forum in the country with the theme of “experiential luxury.” Defined as the aesthetics of an emerging concept in the global marketplace, it encourages professionals to embrace a new mindset—creating rich and dynamic environments, which indulges the senses. They gathered top professionals from the industry (and beyond) to discuss their thoughts on it.

Considered as one of the most prominent female architects in the country, Cathy Saldaña is Managing Director of ArcoGroup and Architects Director of PDP, plus a member of the American Institute of Architect. Her portfolio includes airports for Ayala Land, hotels such as Seda Lio in Palawan, Shangri-La Resorts, Marriott Hotels and several private island resorts. She believes that experiential luxury in architecture and design is an immersive, multi-sensorial experience. It could be luxury bathed in nature, with features that enhance the sustainable and authentic environment. She adds that the goal of luxury should be to overwhelm the senses, provide pleasure and awaken relaxation.

Clint Nagata is founder and co-CEO of BLINK Design Group, a design firm based in Bangkok. His cutting-edge designs are executed across the globe with prominent projects like Conrad Bora Bora Nui, Fairmont Sanur Beach Resort and locally, the soon-to-rise Mandarin Oriental Manila. He believes that experiential luxury is a consumer's preference for individualization, which takes on swift character. Luxury doesn't mean “stale,” meanwhile design is meant to reflect what its location.

Founders of Atelier Almario, sisters Cynthia and Ivy Almario, honed their crafts in Los Angeles, California before heading back home to start their very own design studio. Among the most recognized names in the industry, they have completed noteworthy works such as Astoria Boracay, Movenpick Cebu and Midas Hotel. Their work is a fine example of practical luxury, which takes into consideration impactful designs for residential, commercial and hospitality.

Angel Yang, president of Kohler Co. Kitchen & Bath, Asia Pacific, concludes, “We at Kohler define luxury as a feeling. We design products that enrich comfortable spaces, elevating the mood and creating that feeling of customized luxury.”
