Get the Look: Mari Jasmine’s Fresh Romance Style

Love is the word (you’ve probably heard) and it sure looks good on our February cover star

Having Mari Jasmine grace our latest cover was one thing. Enjoying excellent conversation with her was another. And seeing her serve look after look like the fashion chameleon she is was the icing on the cake.

For February, the fashion was all about striking a balance between posh and playful. The #wonderxmari shoot alluded to romance, too, as the month of love calls for, but did not hastily suggest lace, jewels or frilly dresses. Instead? A chunky sneaker to counterpose a delicate, sheer jumpsuit. A breezy button-down worn as a dress and offset by a slick, structured boot. At the same time, mismatched earrings and mix and matched socks made cameos here and there.

A rainbow starburst kind of a fashion festivity, Mari Jasmine brought to life this new brand of romantic style. Now right below, how you, too, can get the look.

A Different Kind of Bling
Meet Firma and AC +632: the treasure trove of unique accessories.

While we love the classic stud earring and the fail-safe hoop, there are moments that call for the stand-out accessory: the kind of finds that, without a doubt, live behind the doors of two very special stores at Greenbelt. We’re talking about Firma and AC +632, the multi-brand lifestyle stores that never fail to surprise us with their selection of trinkets, quirky baubles and one-of-a-kind jewelry. At the shoot, Firma’s rainbow earrings were one way to warm up an otherwise structured, no-frills look.

The New Power Suit
A prelude to summertime and an introduction to color wheel tailoring.

If there’s a reason to shy away from neutrals and dive right into color, it’s this. Coordinating suit pieces in bright hues are a refreshing sight to look at and together, they’re instantly chic. Even with a plain white tee, the look is polished. Worn with a bralette, meanwhile, and the ensemble becomes edgier. Those who dare to go braless can go right ahead, too (just be sure to keep fashion tape handy.) In Mari’s case, we decided to mix things up by having her throw on this single sleeve by local designer Nina Amoncio.

Top Today, Dress Tomorrow
Here’s a fashion experiment that’s fairly easy to pull off.

Finally, a way to put those oversized long-sleeved polos to good use––or a reason to shop your father, brother or boyfriend’s closet. Alternatively, you can always spring for the TOQA piece Mari Jasmine herself wore in her cover shoot.

The trick when it comes to the shirt-turned-dress is to nix the sleeves completely, bring the shirt’s neckline around your chest and start buttoning up. When done right, you get a relax, deconstructed summer dress with a sweetheart neckline. To give the look a little shape, it’s best to cinch the waist with a belt, a waist bag or even the shirt sleeves if it works.

Button-down blouse (worn as dress) and belt bag, TOQA, “For Walking” leather high boots, OFF WHITE, bejeweled choker, FIRMA, and gemstone stud and dangling earrings, FIRMA

There’s a lot of fun that comes with an unhindered, unfazed and out-of-the-box approach to dressing up––especially when it comes to seemingly predictable themes like romantic fashion. Take your cues from Mari!
