A 2-Minute Foolproof Guide to Breakfast (for Dummies)

Can't cook? No problem

Among the cough many things I dread as a 20-something—cue eye-roll from Baby Boomers and Gen X—is the reality that one of these days, I will need to learn how to cook. The extent of my kitchen skills is limited to making Pancit Canton and anything that says “instant” in the packaging. And eggs, yes, I can definitely break them. Give me a copy of “Cooking for Dummies”—does it even exist?—and I will be grateful. So TL;DR, a foolproof 2-minute recipe that doesn’t require any prior experience in the kitchen? It does exist; sign me up!

I might just find myself in the kitchen more often many thanks to Quaker Oats Philippines’ breakfast upgrade, the Quaker Oatsilog, a healthier alternative to a full rice meal we Pinoys are notorious for. Not impressed? Oats are high in fiber—with at least 2x more fiber than rice—and help you feel full longer while providing energy throughout the day. With Beta-Glucan, it lowers blood cholesterol because, let’s face it, we’re not getting any younger.

Lauren Young guided us through a surprisingly entertaining cooking session along with other personalities, Sarsá’s Chef JP Anglo, actress and C Ki+chenry Culinary Studio’s Bettinna Carlos and TV personality Xandra Rocha-Araneta. They shared their reimagined Oatsilog recipes with food enthusiasts last March 15 at Essential Goodness in Poblacion, Makati.

I had my hesitations as my partner, who also didn’t know how to cook—perfect combination—and I were tasked to create the Chicken and Mushroom Oatsilog. Lo and behold, I did all the work, and I didn’t screw up. The whole process was actually therapeutic and the finished product exceeded my expectations, especially after skipping lunch that day. Don’t get me wrong, it was scrumptious! The 2-minute claim is real with these very simple steps.

Prepare the ingredients:

2 pieces of eggs

1/2 tbsp milk

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

1/4 cup diced mushrooms

1/2 cup shredded chicken

2 tbsp Quaker Quick Cook or Instant Oats

salt and pepper (add to your liking) and parsley (optional)

Place everything in a bowl, mix and cook it in a pan! Pressed for time or just extra lazy? Put everything in a mason jar and microwave for 2 minutes. Et voilà! Did I stutter? No. Yes, just mix it, and you’re done. No need to pre-heat, baste, splice or whatever Ina Garten says on the daily. Now that is some hocus-pocus!
