The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip brings Y2K to 2021

When times were simpler, I dreamed of a flip phone. My college-aged self played with classmates’ flip devices, just opening and closing and opening and closing them—until I had to give them back, anyway. It was something to do with my hands, a dramatic motion I fantasied about for when I answered calls or had to write out a text message.

Alas, it is 2021 and that flip coveted phone from my teen years is long gone. But, there is the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip—and it’s a worthy contender.

Specs

Let’s get the specs out of the way first. The main display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip measures 6.7-inch FHD + Dynamic AMOLED Display, with the cover display at 1.1” Super AMOLED Display. The front camera, meanwhile, has a 10MP Selfie Camera, with the rear camera sporting a 12MP Ultra Wide Camera and a 12MP Wide-angle Camera.

The battery capacity measures out at 3300mAh, and is compatible with Fast Charging. We’re also talking about 8GB of RAM and 256GB internal storage, powered by the Octa-Core Processor.

Is it a powerhouse? Of course it is.

The thrill (and risk) of a flip phone

Now that the technicalities are out of the way, let’s talk about that thrill of owning a flip phone that’s a smartphone. At first touch, you can’t help but be careful. For so many years, we’ve had to be mindful about sitting on our gadgets and bending them in the slightest because of possible damages (and did we damage them). And while I clearly understood what was in front of me, I was still hesitant.

Needless to say, it took a few (dozen) flips to get comfortable with the device. In the same way we used to click side bezels to wake up our phones, flipping eventually becomes second nature, too—but is still, always, an experience. That aside, what else does it offer?

The flip feature is definitely more than drama. It allows you to use applications in an entirely new way. Use the camera and prop up the device on itself instead of carefully placing it against something and hoping it doesn’t slide outwards; live out your model dreams. Write out a message in the same way you would type on a laptop and pretend you’re a giant. While it's idle and folded in half, check out your notifications easily and experience the ultimate throwback as it reminds of a beeper. Have fun with it.

Time to get real

All that childhood thrill aside, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is a great partner to have beside you throughout the day. It’s reliable, quick, easy to maneuver and performs at a great standard. It is, to put it simply, everything you would expect and want in a device for modern times—it just also serves that extra flair.
