The Right Vibrator and How Life Can Be Better Than Good

The Right Vibrator and How Life Can Be Better Than Good

If you let it that is

The first time I bought a dildo with a built-in vibrator was in 2008. It was hot pink and as big as a non-Filipino dick. My then-partner and I got one out of curiosity and not so much because we needed aid in bed. After all, sex toys aren’t just made for the lewd, gay or lesbian. We actually never used it more than once because we found it too big in girth and honestly, tedious more than pleasurable to use. We had to buy condoms prior to sex, clean and sterilize post-coitus and store in the depths of our closet.

My second toy was a strap-on—surprisingly made for men with erectile dysfunction—purchased for convenience because sometimes one, two fingers just aren’t enough. Did my then-partner and I enjoy it? Sure, but more for her receiving pleasure than mine. We also bought a pocket-sized velvet touch vibrator. That I loved but was made of unsafe material I would later find out. The silver trimming peeled and oxidized over time, and that’s never a good sign.

Still, I felt no profound interest in sex toys. It did amuse me though to see people’s reactions upon the mention of adult gadgets. They’re either flustered or aghast. It’s so rare that someone would respond with genuine interest or lack of judgment. And such was the case when a few work friends and I paid a spontaneous visit to Pleasure Place.

Pleasure Place, though it looked exactly as it did since my last trip, seemed different. The ladies (straight or otherwise, who knows) came in and out. They were sure of what they wanted, what they were for—mostly solo sex—and how big or small they’d like it to be. Meanwhile the all-female staff, were well-informed about their products. Questions were welcomed and recommendations were given to those willing to listen.

The Right Vibrator and How Life Can Be Better Than Good

I walked over to a shelf filled with tiny gadgets and trinkets. Top shelf were tiny bullet vibrators in various colors and finishes. I examined a white bullet vibe, almost the size of a thumb and slightly curved at the sides for an easy grip and another in black but shaped like a tube of lipstick. Without missing a beat, one of the store attendants said, “Parehas lang po yan for the clit, not for penetration. Mas matagal lang yung battery nung white kaya mas mahal.” She added that function is pretty basic—no fancy pulsations here—and battery life depends on frequency of use. So if I plan on using it more than once a week, I should get three or six extra button cell batteries, which they also conveniently sell in-store.

We left Pleasure Place each with our own souvenirs as well as renewed (hope and) insight on sex toys. My purchase was the basic white vibe for less than a thousand pesos. It doesn’t take up too much space, it got the job done, whether for solo or partner sex, and in fact, added a dash of spice and convenience in the bedroom. It has also functioned as a mood booster (orgasms = oxytocin) for times when I feel demotivated or when life is just too painful. So it seems I found the one, the right vibrator that suits my needs. The only caveat would be the wavering pulsations when the battery goes out. And it sucks all the more when you run out of power mid-sex or right before you come, so stock up on strong cell batteries.

Sex and adult toys may not always be a hot topic, in fact, it’s still pretty taboo in Pinoy culture. But when it’s talked about (in a non sexual or threatening way), take a second to think about your hesitation or aversion towards the subject. It might change your mind to know that it was actually invented by doctors in the early 1800s or that women were once thought of as fleshy receptacles for male lust hence our sexual frustrations then and up to now.

Sex education or postivity, be it on what sex truly means or the tools that make it a little more satisfying, is not promiscuity. And if for a little over P600, life can feel better than good (but still safe) for me and my partner, I say why the hell not.
