The Internet’s Instant Cookbook: 5 TikTok Recipes You Can Try at Home

Upgrade your meals by whipping up these dishes

Amidst the madness of 2020 and coping with the pandemic, a lot of us turned to TikTok for a better use (or waste, you be the judge of that) of our time. We’ve seen friends and their friends bust moves to Megan Thee Stallion’s Savage. We've exhausted our arms trying out dalgona coffee and other TikTok recipes at some point—don’t worry, no judgement here.

The app’s library has become more vast and varied. It’s so easy to get lost in the waves of video content because the choices are endless; from comedy skits and dance or acting challenges to relaxing skincare ASMR and fashion hacks. But aside from that, TikTok also serves as an instant cookbook for kitchen newbies and self-proclaimed kitchen whizzes. Here, everyone’s free to share mouth-watering videos of their dishes and sometimes with a step-by-step process on how to nail them—all within 60 seconds.

To save you from scrolling endlessly for a new dish to experiment with, here’s a list of some internet-approved TikTok recipes you can try at home.

Soy Sauce Chicken by Tiffycooks

Serves two people, 45 minutes prep and cooking time

What you’ll need:

2 pcs chicken thighs

2 and a half tbsp of regular soy sauce

2 and a half tbsp of premium or dark soy sauce

Dash of white pepper

1 half tbsp Asian five-spice powder

1 tsp brown sugar

3 cloves of garlic, minced

What to do:

Tiffy’s version instructs everyone to add the ingredients (in the order above!) as they go and mix at the end. Or if you want to be a little thorough, you can mix all ingredients in a bowl before marinating the chicken. Let it marinate in the mixture for a while.

When the chicken is fully thawed and soaked, pop it in your air fryer for 480°F or 250°C for 20 minutes. No air fryer? No problem! Frying it as usual or using a turbo broiler works perfectly fine too. Go forth and enjoy the crispy, juicy realness.

Garlic Kimchi Noodles by Twaydabae

Serves two people, 45 minutes prep and cooking time

@twaydabaeFull written recipe is on my Instagram (Twaydabae) #learnontiktok #recipevideo #easyrecipe #noodles #fyp? original sound – twaydabae

What you’ll need:

8 cloves of minced garlic (or more, your choice)

A serving of thinly sliced kimchi

300 grams of protein (pork, beef or shrimp)

Salt and pepper to taste

2 tbsp butter

1 tbsp gochujang or Korean chili sauce (samba or sriracha can work too)

1 tbsp oyster sauce

1 tbsp soy sauce

Chilli flakes

300g of pasta

What to do:

Boil the pasta noodles. In a pan, cook your protein of choice in a little cooking oil. After that, use the same pan to saute the butter, gochujang, garlic, kimchi, oyster sauce and soy sauce. Once sauce is oozing and kimchi looks quite glazed, add the cooked pasta noodles and mix.

Include a dash of pasta water to avoid it from drying out. Mix for a few more minutes and serve. Add in chili flakes and cheese to taste before serving. In true Twaydabae fashion, this recipe is *chefs kiss!*

@chefchrischoHow to make Bulgogi Quesadillas ????? #quickrecipes #healthyrecipe #cooking #recipe #bulgogi #quesadillas #koreanfood #tiktokchef #?? #fyp #foryou? original sound – Chef Chris Cho

What you’ll need:

300g of rib eye steak (or any beef of your choice)

1 and ½  tbsp brown sugar

6 tbsp cup soy sauce

1 tbsp sesame oil

¼ tbsp of garlic (minced or crushed)

½ tbsp of onion (minced)

5 tbsp of coarsely grated pear

? cup of water

Sesame seeds (optional)

2 tbsp chopped green onions (optional)

½ cup of cheese

2 Tortilla wraps

What to do:

To make the bulgogi from scratch, combine the soy sauce, brown sugar and sesame oil. In a separate bowl, mix the grated pear, garlic, onions and water in a bowl. Mix both into one container and then add the beef. Soak it for a few minutes or even overnight in the marinade. Lightly coat your frying pan in cooking oil and fry as usual. You can add onions and chopped green onions as you fry.

In a separate pan, fry both sides of the tortilla in a light coat of butter until some parts turn golden brown. Once flipped to the other side, add the cheese on one half of the tortilla and the cooked bulgogi in the other. Fold and let the cheese melt before serving it hot and oozing. This is some easy at-home fusion dining.

@grilledcheesesocialBaked feta pasta viral recipe! Inspired by #uunifeta via @liemessa & @tiiupiret #learnontiktok #foodtiktok #foodie? She Share Story (for Vlog) – ????

What you’ll need:

2 ½ cups of small tomatoes

1 block of feta cheese

3-5 cloves of garlic, chopped

Salt and pepper to taste

4 tbsp olive oil

500g of pasta noodles (your choice)

Fresh basil

What to do:

Boil the pasta noodles al dente and preheat your oven to 400°F or 200°C. In a separate baking dish, add cherry tomatoes, salt, pepper and a dash of olive oil. Toss it before putting the block of feta cheese in the middle. Evenly season the tomatoes and cheese with the rest of the olive oil, garlic cloves, salt, pepper and any additional spices or herbs of your choice.

Once done, take it out and add the noodles. Mix thoroughly and serve! You can also choose a different kind of carb to pair with this. Other versions completely skip the pasta and use the dish as a dip for bread chips.
