As a child, I was occasionally labeled as “maarte (vain).” I loved to play dress up and would sneak into my mother’s vanity—a sacred shrine for a 5-year-old—any chance I got. I was also very emotional, maybe because I was the bunso (youngest) in the family and would get accused of being “OA” or “overacting.” For a long time, I considered these attributes as flaws; I felt I could make more sound and wise decisions had I been “less” of my most genuine self.
Then I discovered acting as a junior in high school. I used these emotions to my advantage and flourished as a thespian in an English drama club, which ironically had “arte” in its name. I tapped into my feelings and let loose, exploring grief, joy, wonder and more.
It’s unfortunate how much we’re made to believe that shame and guilt should be tied to such human experiences. Good thing we’ve made progress as a society and have become more accepting when it comes to “feeling feelings,” especially for younger generations. We have become more expressive, especially through our many social media platforms, communicating our truths and showing who we really are.
From the joy I feel spent with the people I love to anxiety brought by agonizing headlines, and hope for brighter days ahead, these are real, unfiltered emotions I go through in a day. In quarantine, many of us are in a state of emotional overdrive; we feel so many things all at once. Confronting these emotions, rather than holding them back, takes courage. Resilience can sometimes mean simply recognizing our feelings and making space for them.

At first, the process of documenting the emotions I go through in a day, felt strange and awkward.
