The ASUS Vivobook S 15 is the world’s first 15.6-inch 120 Hz 2.8K OLED panel
Buying a laptop is like making an investment. It’s a commitment that you hope will prove itself in the long run. You want to get the most use of it—whether that means for play or work—and you want it to deliver a consistently easy experience. But with the way that technology evolves on practically a daily basis, the choice of which device to commit yourself to becomes complicated. Well, let us make it easier for you, because we’re fully backing up the ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED (K3502).
First thing’s first: design
The first thing you see in a laptop is its design, so it’s only fair we talk about that first. The new ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED series has an overall sleek look, measuring in with a side profile of only 19mm. Its easy to carry, and the lid sports an aluminum alloy finish with—at least the one we have—a unique Indie Black color. Have we mentioned it’s only 1.8kg? Lightweight and perfect for the hybrid work setups most of us have now.
It also comes with two Thunderbolt™ 4 USB-C ports, each of which can support up to 40 Gbps data bandwidth, 4K or 8K display output and up to 100W power delivery. There’s the standard HDMI 2.0 port, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port and an audio jack, too. Easy to connect, easy to expand (just in case you need it).
Next up: feel
If you’re particular about the touch of your devices, you’ll rest easy with this one. It’s smooth to the touch, the keypad’s height is comfortable; you know you’re pressing down without overtly exerting yourself. The touchpad is easy to maneuver, too. And it has a num pad that doesn’t excessively extend the length of the entire unit, which means you get all the convenience without that added bulk.
Okay, here they are: the specs
The ASUS Vivobook S 15 OLED is the world’s first 15.6-inch 120 Hz 2.8K OLED panel. Broken down, this means it has a 120 Hz refresh rate, features a 16:9 ratio on a 15.6 inch OLED HDR panel and supports up to 2880 x 1620 resolution. The screen right in front of your fingertips has never looked better. But don’t stress about the eye strain so much, because this ASUS number also emits 70% less harmful blue light.
With a 70 Wh battery capacity and 90W charging adapter, it’s a device that’s easy to plug in, charge and take around with you. And unless you’re planning on a 24-hour binge in the middle of a no-electricity city, you need not to worry.
The ASUS Vivobook S 15 can sport up to a 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i7 12700H processor, which is unusual for a laptop of its size—but it’s made possible because of the ASUS IceCool thermal technology. So do what you need to do, and revel in the fact that something so sleek and small can deliver everything you need. It still warms up, of course, but it doesn’t get to the point that you need to worry about it when you use it the entire day. Just use your trusty laptop stand to make sure some air gets through.
But the actual important thing: usage
There’s no doubt that the ASUS Vivobook S 15 delivers what it says it will do. It will work when you need to work, and it will allow you to play when you need to play. But is it a partner that we can commit to? Is it an experience that’s worth the investment?
So you open up the device, choose your language, country and keyboard. It sets up easily as soon as you log into some WiFi. You tap on the fingerprint sensor a few times (it’s also the power button, FYI) for security, and you input your PIN. And you’re pretty much done. It even comes with Microsoft Office 2021 Home & Student, which means you are already saving on a few thousand you can spend elsewhere. And actually using it comes like second nature. There’s barely any needed time to adjust; it just does what it sets out to do in the same breath that you do what you do.
By this point, you should already know that the Vivobook S 15 can work as hard as you do, but can it play as hard, too? Watching video clips and even binging on it is a dream, with crisp sound and a clean OLED screen to give you the best viewing experience. And the cherry on top of it all is the ASUS Antimicrobial Guard, a special surface treatment meant to keep bacteria at bay. So in a world that’s still particular about safeguarding health, this is practically godsend.
