Our Most Anticipated 2020 Anime Releases

This year’s a big one, but here are our top choices for the 2020 anime releases

When the seasons change, so do our watch lists. We go from title to title depending on what’s new, what’s coming back and what’s returning for another season. But because this year has just started (yes, that’s right; it’s still January), we still have our eyes on the big picture.

This year’s 2020 anime releases? They don’t disappoint.

Movies

Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet

Set to release in April and inspired by the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet sees the heads of companies kidnapped one by one, as they come together for the world’s largest sports festival. The mystery, of course, is taken on by our favorite pint-sized detective, Conan.

Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna

Set some years after Digimon Adventure tri. and set to release in March, this chapter of the franchise sees Taichi and his friends reaching adulthood—which means that their Digimon partnerships are coming to an end. But in the midst of this, the group needs to come together one last time to battle it out against Eosmon.

Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur

Coming in March, Doraemon: Nobita's New Dinosaur, serves as the 50th anniversary celebration of the franchise—so what better place to start than the beginning? We’re heading back, where Nobita found an egg he names Kyu and Myu upon its hatching.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

As My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising starts to release in February, we see All Might give up his hero role as the Symbol of Peace. But as he does so, a dark force in the form of Nine comes to the stage, putting Deku and his classmates under pressure.

Violet Evergarden Movie

Following the success of the series release, Violet Evergarden is being turned into a movie set to be released in April 2020. In this new chapter, the focus is on noblewoman Isabella York, who has difficulty in coming to terms with the expectations put on her by her finishing school. Her new manners teacher, Violet, gets the bulk of her rebellion.

New

Gibiate

There’s another monster hunter story in town and it’s called Gibiate

Here, a virus called Gibia is turning infected people into different monsters, depending on their age, sex and race. Then comes a samurai and ninja from the early Edo period, who partner with a doctor, to try an find a cure.

Returning

Enn Enn no Shouboutai: Ni no Shou Ni-no-Shou

As a second season set to premiere in July, Enn Enn no Shouboutai: Ni no Shou Ni-no-Shou introduces more interesting characters into the plot—which, we hope, stay as imaginative as the first season.

Haikyuu!

Simple narrative, effective storytelling and top quality animation.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? III

Season 3 is going to see things pick up with Bell Cranel finding himself in a war where he’s trying to stop both sides. We’re also going to see some great new characters get into the mix.

Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru

The long wait from 2015 is finally over; Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru is ~hopefully~ on its way this year. While we want answers to the cliffhanger from half a decade ago answered, we’re also looking forward to the same character treatment and maybe a little dive into doing what’s right and how that’s never as simple as it’s made to seem.

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Continuing the story in April, we follow the protagonist, who mysteriously wakes up in some sort of fantasy world—where he revives at a pseudo “save point” every time he dies. But why is he there and why does no one remember anything except him? We hope to find out.

Do the 2020 anime releases make for a great year in the genre? Certainly looks like it.
