Alien Documentaries and Movies for World UFO Day

…and beyond!

Are we alone in the galaxy?

It’s an age-old question that even NASA is still trying to answer. After all, it’ll take a ton of missions to space to confirm it. But there are instances where non-Earthly life allegedly makes themselves known to us. You know, through countless sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFO) from the past decades. There’s a whole community of believers that celebrate July 2nd as World UFO Day, meant to spread awareness about the existence of intelligent life beyond Earth. Fun fact: It’s in line with the day when an unidentified flying object crashed in Roswell, New Mexico back in 1947.

A lot of us enjoy alien-centered documentaries and movies the way others watch horror, gore and true crime. We’re obsessed with hypothesizing or letting our imagination run wild about things we can’t explain. It’s part of our childhood; we grew up with E.T., Lilo and Stitch, Transformers and even the Marvel cinematic universe. Call it escapism or the suspension of disbelief. No one needs to be a believer to watch and enjoy these.

Below, we share some alien-UFO movies and documentaries for your consideration. Mull over the existence of intelligent life outside of the Earth while you watch these, all available on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.

Bob Lazar: Area 51 and Flying Saucers (2018)

Bob Lazar is the man who made the first allegation of linking Area 51 and aliens. He claimed to work at Area 51, where he has tasked to reverse-engineer a spacecraft he believed was not human-made. Bob made headlines when he approached a local TV station in Nevada to broadcast his statements. This turned him into a global phenomenon before he ultimately fell off the radar. Follow his entire story with Bob Lazar: Area 51 and Flying Saucers.

The Phenomenon (2020)

Many alien and UFO documentaries have come and gone, but no documentary has been praised like The Phenomenon. I mean, it boasts an 88% critic score from Rotten Tomatoes. This must mean that this documentary is worth watching. It’s always been alleged that the existence of extraterrestrial life is being covered up by the government. This documentary is hailed as an explosive exposition on true occurrences and the succeeding cover-up missions, including interviews with witnesses and former military officials to back their claims.

John Was Trying to Contact Aliens (2020)

For over 30 years, John Shepherd made it his life mission to make contact with aliens. His main medium? Broadcasting music to outer space a la radio disc jockey. Yes, complete with a spiel and a recommended timeslot to tune back in for their fix of human tunes. This 16-minute documentary is short and sweet, yet it packs a profound message: that we are all looking for a connection. Follow John’s journey as he tries to make contact with a world beyond us, only to find it closer to home.

Men In Black Movies (1997-2019)

Okay, what if we actually co-exist with aliens? The Men In Black trilogy best explores this hypothesis. Watch how Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) fight extraterrestrial crime in true MiB nature. Foiling intergalactic terrorists and restoring the balance of the space-time continuum is all in their days’ work. The new generation of MiB agents, Agent H (Chris Hemsworth) and Agent M (Tessa Thompson) of Men In Black: International, aren’t bad themselves too.

Super8 (2011)

J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg are no strangers to sci-fi and this tandem went all out in Super 8. A group of friends was shooting their own movie with a Super 8 camera when they witness a devastating train crash. The catastrophe triggers multiple different incidents: a load of missing person reports, dogs running away and electrical issues. This makes them assume that the crash was no accident and it actually releases a supernatural creature out to eliminate the human population.

A Quiet Place (2018)

If you’re looking for another movie to see a world where the aliens did not come in peace, watch A Quiet Place. It’s set in a post-apocalyptic world, where the majority of the human population has been annihilated by blind aliens with super-sensitive hearing. The only rule to survival? To remain completely silent. Follow the Abbott family made up of Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Lee (John Krasinski), Regan (Millicent Simmonds) and Marcus (Noah Jupe) as they dodge aliens and fight for their lives.
