Daft Punk Just Announced Their End

If we thought 2021 couldn’t hurt us anymore, we were fooled because Daft Punk just broke up

Band breakups always hurt, whether it involves my favorite K-Pop groups or my emotional support emo band (hello, MCR?). So, waking up to the news that Daft Punk just split up gave me emotional whiplash much like every Daft Punk fan, casual or not, around the world.

The Grammy-winning French dance music duo announced their breakup by dropping an 8-minute video called Epilogue on their YouTube channel today. Epilogue features an excerpt from their 2006 sci-fi film Electroma, which shows the two in their signature helmets and leather jackets in the middle of nowhere.

Daft Punk, composed of Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, are the musical geniuses under shiny helmets and behind the DJ booth. They were the brains behind some well-loved releases such as The Weeknd’s I Feel It Coming and Kanye West’s Stronger, which also sampled Daft Punk’s own Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.

The pair bagged four Grammy awards in 2014 with their album Random Access Memories and lead single Get Lucky featuring Pharrell Williams. Beyond mainstream hit singles, Daft Punk also got into film scoring with the 2010 sci-fi film TRON: Legacy. This is just the edge of the impressive resumés they’ve racked up for the past 28 years in the industry. It’s no brainer that Daft Punk have impacted pop and dance music the way no one else can.

The title itself, Epilogue, was a hint of what it was and what to expect when you watch. But once the shot of their robot hands forming their iconic triangle sign and the years “1993 – 2021” at the bottom appear on screen, anyone who’s familiar with the pair would feel a tinge (or more) of hurt about their split.

Epilogue—as cliché as this sounds—marks the end of an era in dance music. The looping chorus from their 2013 B-side Touch featuring Paul Williams sent goosebumps down my spine, especially against the clip of the sunrise and when I realized that the lyrics are, possibly, the duo’s parting words. “Hold on, if love is the answer you’re home.”
