Our Favorite TV and Movie Freaks to Channel This Halloween

Our Favorite TV and Movie Freaks to Channel This Halloween

From the iconic oddballs to the contemporary kooks, here are eight of our favorite movie freaks to inspire your Halloween look this year

We in the Philippines have an ingrained, culturally nurtured tendency to think one collective thought when the calendar page reads September: the holidays are coming. But as excited as we are to turn up the Jose Mari Chan and Mariah Carey hits, this Christmas fast-tracking mindset is upsetting in the way it glosses over an equally festive occasion. Thatā€™s right, Iā€™m talking about Halloween.

While Iā€™ve never been one to head out and join the late October crowds, I harbor my fair share of affection for the occasion. Thereā€™s something sentimental in the way people in our village gear up for the yearly trick-or-treat rounds, turning their homes into haunted houses and their cupboards into candy-filled caves that could rival Willy Wonkaā€™s factory. Thereā€™s a lot to love in the way there's never a lack of places to celebrate: just too many parties to pop into or clubs to stumble across. The abundance of ways to get spooked a la zombie runs, after-hours scavenger hunts and late-night investigations leaves us with lots of ground to cover.

Then there are the costumesā€“ā€“arguably the best part. Consider it fact: thereā€™s no better time to pay due tribute to the freaks and misfits of pop culture than the internationally recognized day of horror.Ā

If you havenā€™t quite decided the what, where and how of your Halloween this year, weā€™re determined to at least help you sort out the who. Ahead, we enumerate some of film and TVā€™s most iconic, costume-worthy freaks to help you get started on that Halloween moodboard.

The one we all know and love: Edward Scissorhands from Edward Scissorhands

A Halloween mainstay, dressing up as Edward Scissorhands is a job that calls for intricacy and unshakeable commitment to one's costumeā€“ā€“but hey, do it right and you're sure to get nods of approval (and maybe even be awarded Best in Costume!).

The one we paid homage to on our cover: The Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland

Better stock up on face paintā€“ā€“you're going to need a lot of it. Another non-negotiable for this look is the mane of curly orange locks, unless of course you're going with a modernized version a la Mimiyuuuh on our October cover.

The one that we all feared as kids: Jigsaw from Saw

All you need is the nightmare-inducing mask, and you'll be good to go!

The one that picked up new meaning: The Joker from Joker

Heath Ledger's Joker set the bar high as far as movies and costumes go, but Joaquin Phoenix's take is proving to stand its ground. Expect to see an ambitious mix of Jokers aplenty as you go about your Halloween celebrations this month.

The one that made stripes signal madness: Betelgeuse from Beetlejuice

It's time to dig up those pinstriped jeans you bought in the name of fashion in 2012. The manic star of Beetlejuice gives us the chance to wear our stripes proud every Halloween. Now all you need is a generous helping of face paint, a just-got-out-of-a-catfight wig and the personality to match!

The one that youā€™ll need to keep in check: Cousin Itt from Addams Family

Alright, we're going to be real with you: this one's bound to be a struggle to keep on all night. Can you imagine sporting this multi-tiered fit in the sweltering heat, sandwiched between the Halloween crowds? It won't be easy, but if you're the type to go the extra mile for a memorable costume, it looks like you've met your match.

The one that took stalking to the next level: Joe from YouĀ

If you've got nothing remotely costume-like in your wardrobe, don't fret just yet. There are plenty of TV and movie freaks who aren't characterized by outrageous ensembles and crazy hair. One of the many is Joe of Netflix's You, a guy who gets a little too deep in his feelings.

The one that we all relate to somehow: Lady Bird from Lady Bird

We've all felt a little out of place at one point or another, haven't we? Forget the wild costumes and zany, nightmarish characters. This year, honor the misfits by dressing up as Saoirse Ronan's character in Lady Bird.

The ones who turned the Hamptons upside-down: Kevin and Marcus Copeland (or Brittany and Tiffany Wilson)

Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil stole both the show and (Instagram) hearts and when they showed up to Black Magic, Star Magic's Halloween ball, dressed as the dynamic duo from White Chicks. If you're willing to commit to sporting a blonde wig, learning a dance routine or a wearing a knock-off Bjƶrk dress (or all three!) for a night, this might just be the scene-stealer of a costume you've been looking for.
