All the Things That Got Us Excited During the 2023 Grammys

Another year, another award show season

Another year, another award show season. This time around, the 2023 Grammys set social media aflame thanks to more monumental pop culture moments, jaw-dropping performances and—inevitably—snubs galore with Trevor Noah as the host. While we all have our opinions and thoughts, many of the happenings during the 65th Grammy Awards have us feeling excited, nostalgic and even moved. The show celebrated Hip-Hop’s 50th Anniversary, bore witness to another talented person getting the coveted EGOT status and birthed celebrity interactions that will keep their fans fed for a long, long while.

Scroll ahead for a recap of what got us hyped during the Grammys this 2023:

The fashion

Of course, everything begins with what the celebrities wear as they strut down the Grammy red carpet. As much as we want to fawn over everyone, the biggest standout is none other than Mommiana Cardi B. She donned an exquisite dress by Gaurav Gupta,  a royal blue sculptural hooded dress that debuted just five days earlier in Paris Couture Week. Another worthy contender is Taylor Swift’s Midnights-themed two-piece ensemble by Roberto Cavalli. The sapphire blue fabric embellished with crystals and rhinestones brings her newest album to life.

Speaking of Taylor Swift, the pop star won her 2023 Grammy for a different category. All Too Well: The Short Film took home the Grammy gold for Best Music Video. Producer Saul Germaine accepts the award on the team’s behalf during the pre-show categories. “For the [Recording Academy] and my peers to acknowledge me as a director, and in doing so, acknowledge my work to try and reclaim my music… I’m blown away, “ the singer tweets. “Thank you to all the fans who willed this to happen.”

In 2022, many people believed Lin Manuel-Miranda would take home a Grammy and receive EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) status. However, for the 2023 Grammys, the iconic Viola Davis completed the quadfecta of the arts by winning Best Audio Book for her autobiography, Finding Me. The Woman King star stands as the 18th person to achieve the elite status, following her 2016 Oscar for Fences, 2015 Emmy for How To Get Away with Murder and two-time Tony wins for King Hedley II (2001) and Fences (2010).

Beyoncé’s historic sweep

No one is spared from the perils of heavy traffic—Beyoncé included. The visionary may have missed her first win of the evening thanks to the traffic jam, but it was worth it as she made history. As she and Jay-Z finally settle into the show and the awards continue to pile on, the songstress finally breaks the record and becomes the most Grammy-awarded artist in history with 32 trophies. Her winning moments:  Best R&B song for Cuff It, Best Traditional R&B Performance for Plastic Off the Sofa and Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance

Nonetheless, the elusive Album of the Year award remained out of her grasp. The decision definitely comes as a surprise knowing that Harry’s House took home the gold, but that’s another discussion that isn't for now. At least Queen Bey took time in her record-breaking speech to thank the community that founded the genre Renaissance was built on. “I’d like to thank the queer community for your love and for inventing the genre,” she says in gratitude.

Kim Petras makes trans history

Thanks to the hotter-than-hell collaboration of the century with Sam Smith, Unholy singer Kim Petras took home her first-ever Grammy. The transgender and non-binary duo, two pop forces to be reckoned with, make history as Unholy won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. It’s been a long time coming, but at least it’s finally happened. This marks another glass ceiling shattered in Grammys history.

#Haylor keeping us alive

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles kept the platonic #Haylor enjoyers well-fed as they interacted with each other the entire Grammys 2023 evening. Fans spotted Taylor dancing to Harry’s performance without a care in the world and even going out of her way to greet him at his table. But perhaps one of the deeper moments happened as Taylor was one of the few people standing during his Album of the Year acceptance speech, supporting him despite the hecklers cussing him out. Of course, she knows that feeling all too well (pun intended), so why wouldn’t she offer the same support she got back in 2009?
