YouTube Music: Is It Worth Checking Out?

YouTube Music: Is It Worth Checking Out?

Here are our thoughts on the number one video app’s music streaming counterpart

On the day half of the K-pop industry got Thanos-snapped from Spotify, my pessimistic self set out on a journey to find the next music streaming holy grail. I really didn’t want to up and leave the app I used to build my music library for the past six years, but another part of me thought that maybe it’s time for a change. So, I crowdsourced options of other streaming platforms I can try out and almost all of the responses pointed to YouTube Music.

At first glance, all music streaming platforms had the following: a wide selection of music, easy-to-use interface and a wallet-friendly subscription fee. YouTube Music’s subscription fee is P169 a month for an individual subscription. This can come off as a little pricier than its competitors, but there are reasons that might convince you to cash out a little bit more.

To put it bluntly, it’s just like using YouTube without the side effect of an overheating phone.

There will always be days when we want to listen to certain song covers, live performances or maybe even guided meditation clips only available on YouTube, and that's where their music counterpart definitely delivers. YouTube Music solves one of the longest issues we’ve had with their OG platform: music pauses when you leave the app. Yes, our dilemma of choosing between one or the other is over because on YouTube Music, you can multitask.

Another reason that makes it unique is that you can stream videos and songs uploaded to their site. This includes fan-taken videos from pre-pandemic festivals, stripped-down covers and more. We can now ditch scouring for unofficial covers uploaded as podcasts (I did this for a while, and I am not proud of it) or ripping the .mp3 file off our favorite videos, old school style. Users can also choose easily between the official song version or the music video version at the tap of the button. And who doesn’t love hands-free music and video streaming?

The last added plus is that YouTube Music also lets us play their whole library on repeat, without any ads or having to rewind it every time the song ends. I know, this is a staple for all music streaming platforms since this is the one feature we’re paying for. But for YouTube Music, as long as it’s on their site, we can do this to any song or video that we want. I don’t know about you, but now I can finally say goodbye to Listenonrepeat and go straight to YouTube Music. This means you can stream hard-to-find favorite songs, such as Brie Larson’s version of Metric’s Black Sheep from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, uninterrupted and on loop.

The reasons I listed above still might not convince you to check it out, perhaps because the thought of starting a new music library from scratch can be daunting. Spotify loyalists might not even entertain the thought of switching streaming platforms, but as the saying goes, don’t knock it ‘til you've tried it!
