There’s no doubt that Netflix has been a significant form of escapism in our daily quarantine routines. This month of October brings in Halloween delights and more to satisfy our Spooktober needs. The adrenaline of spooky season is creeping in with enticing films and TV shows for diehard horror fans. For those who can’t handle intense fright night films, Netflix has some wholesome Halloween content for young adventurers, too.

#Alive 

For those obsessed with the glory and gore of zombie apocalyptic films, #Alive will please your thirst for adrenaline in quarantine. A lone gamer, Oh Joon-woo, finds himself in isolation in the middle of an infectious outbreak. As he observes the cannibalistic nature of strangers from his apartment, he finds company from Kim Yoo-bin, who lives on the other side of the complex. Both characters individually break out of isolation. Will they survive? Will you?

The Babysitter: Killer Queen 

The horror comedy The Babysitter makes a comeback (literally), as the satanic cult that Cole thought he had defeated unexpectedly returns. Once again, Cole has to outsmart the joint forces of evil to survive the night. 

 

Social distancing has made movie nights with friends more complicated, but Netflix Party says otherwise. Stream The Babysitter: Killer Queen with your friends for a night of comedic horror.

Hubie Halloween

Hubie Halloween is this month’s ultimate family film. The king of slapstick comedy, Adam Sandler, plays Hubie Dubois—a man who spends his Halloween ensuring the safety of Salem’s residents. Hubie stays on high alert when the neighbours start disappearing. Sandler’s hilarious character tries to convince those around him that monsters exist and he can be the saviour of them all. 

 

Sandler is joined by his Grown Ups co-stars, Kevin James, Rob Schneider, Shaquille O’Neal, Colin Quinn and Steve Buscemi. The star-studded cast brings many laughs and pop culture references both kids and parents will enjoy.

A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting

This adventurous new series has been described as “The Last Kids on Earth meets Goosebumps.” The story follows a high school freshman who is recruited into an international secret society of babysitters who protect kids from monsters. Kelly, the protagonist, proves her abilities to save the world without ruining her social life. 

 

Based on the book series, this one’s definitely a gem for tweens to enjoy.

Rebecca

Based on Daphne du Maurier’s 1938 gothic novel, the hauntingly beautiful Rebecca is the psychological thriller we’ve all been waiting for! Armie Hammer plays handsome widower Maxim de Winter and Lily James portrays an unnamed newly married woman who uncovers the mystery that is Rebecca.

His House

His House is a timely film that uncovers the trauma of refugees and the hardships of adjusting to their new lives. After escaping a war in South Sudan, a young couple finds solace in a small English town unaware of the evil lurking within its walls. The film provides a breath of fresh air as it challenges the classic haunted house scenario.

Ratched

From the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ryan Murphy takes the twisted Nurse Mildred Ratched into his own campy horror style with the help of Hollywood’s chameleon, Sarah Paulson. The suspenseful drama showcases Mildred’s employment at an asylum where there are excruciating human experiments. Her dedicated demeanor masks her underlying scheme to infiltrate the mental health system.

The Haunting of Bly Manor 

The Haunting of Bly Manor features a new set of characters set in 1980s England. But the eerie tone of the first season still lingers. Based on the book Turn of the Screw by Henry James, a young governess is tasked to take care of an orphaned boy and girl. As the story progresses, the hauntings begin. 

 

Some cast members, as seen on the trailer, will be returning as an addition to the Bly Manor’s storyline.

Unsolved Mysteries: Volume 2

Unsolved Mysteries: Volume 2 is releasing six new episodes, which is perfect as fans have been looking forward to more unexplained disappearances and bizarre occurrences. The editing style for Volume 2 will be unlike the first as the creators of the original docuseries have made the decision to create a deeper connection with the audience. 

 

Cosgrove/Meurer Productions and 21 Laps Entertainment have the producers of Stranger Things by their side. This definitely hints that the next few episodes will send chills down our spines!

This young fantasy series gives a subtle hint of Harry Potter charm. Going strong on its fourth season, Ethel and Mildred put their limits to the test as they compete for the title of being Head Girl.

Super Monsters: Dia de los Monsters 

For those unaware, “Dia De Los Muertos” or “The Day of The Dead” is a Mexican holiday where families reconcile with the souls of deceased loved ones for a brief celebratory reunion. Dia de los Monsters emulates the real tradition with a twist. In this season, new characters will be introduced on October 9th!

The children’s animated series has been renewed for 10 new episodes to cover more of its books and to satisfy its growing audience. This series showcases four best friends who discover a radio transmitter which reveals that they may not be the last kids on earth after all!

Netflix has certainly proven to be our quarantine hero. Halloween might be canceled this year, but we still get to experience all the thrills and chills through our screens. Putting on a costume is fun but pajamas are more comfortable!
