Why Fashion Girls Can’t Wait for Ocean’s 8

Fashion and feminism? Count us in

It’s that time of year again. Happy Met Gala, fashion folk!

While you might still be recovering from some of today’s red carpet looks, we’re here to remind you that the Met-centric festivities won’t be wrapping up so soon. We don’t know about you, but us fashion girls will be on our toes until next month for the release of Ocean’s 8. Arguably the next big fashion moment to hit the silver screen, the flick picks up the sartorial element that played a crucial role in the original 1960s Ocean’s 11 and reinvents it into something completely modern.

From here, we count the reasons why we’re looking forward to Ocean’s 8 (and why you should, too).

THE CAST

We know we’ve got Sandra and Anne on board. Who else are we looking forward to?

Bang slap in the middle of feminist movements and callouts of gender-fueled double standards, the film rounds up a whole cast of badass albeit unlikely lady leads. Cate Blanchett plays Lou, a night club owner and the mastermind’s partner in crime. Mindy Kaling plays Amita, a jewelry designer still living with her naggy mother. Then there’s Sarah Paulson portraying Tammy, a criminal-turned-suburban mom; comedian-rapper Awkwafina as wild card pickpocket Constance; and Helena Bonham-Carter playing Rose, who looks to be a fashion designer beyond her heyday. Last but not the least is real-life Met Gala co-chair Rihanna, who brings life to Caribbean hacker Nine Ball and gives life to us mere mortals.

THE SETTING

Two words: Met. Gala.

Ocean’s 8’s premise is built around one of the fashion sphere’s most relevant events, held annually at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Debbie Ocean (portrayed by Sandra Bullock) plays ringleader in a mission to steal a 150 million-dollar necklace from the neck of Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway), one of the bigshots who graces the red carpet that evening.

THE CAMEOS

It’s an unwritten rule: you can’t have the Met Gala as your setting without punctuating the film with a few celebrity cameos here and there. The Late Late Show host and Carpool Karaoke originator James Corden appears in the trailer as the investigator on Ocean’s case, but who else can we expect to see? Celebrity appearances were up in the twenties count as of February, but word on the street is the likes of Kim Kardashian-West, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Zayn Malik and Olivia Munn are expected to make a cameo. Fashion folk can expect to see Alexander Wang, among other designers, and models of the moment as well. Oh, and don’t forget the Met Gala host herself, Anna Wintour.

THE LOOKS

The film’s costume designer’s name may not ring a bell, but her work certainly will. Esteemed in her field, Sarah Edwards took part in dressing characters for films like Devil’s Advocate, Uptown Girls, Salt and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. None of those films were nearly as fashion-focused as Ocean’s 8, though.

Despite this project being uncharted territory for the costume designer, we like what we’re hearing and seeing so far. Edwards crafted a distinct wardrobe for each character of the crew: the Elizabeth Taylor-inspired actress, the hacker who takes style cues from Bob Marley, the rock n’ roll chick swathed in fur and Saint Laurent. The gowns each of the cast members will be wearing for the staged Met Gala were custom-made by fashion juggernauts, too. Expect to see Anne Hathaway in Valentino, Sandra Bullock in Alberta Ferretti, Cate Blanchett in Givenchy, Rihanna in Zac Posen, Mindy Kaling in Naeem Khan, Sarah Paulson in Prada, Helena Bonham-Carter in Dolce & Gabbana, and Awkwafina in Jonathan Simkhai.

Ocean’s 8 hits theaters this June. In the meantime, get a glimpse into the flick’s mischief, madness and major fashion moments in the official trailer below!
