Women’s Month Listens: Pinays in Audio

More women to add to your playlists

For International Women’s Day, music and audio streaming service Spotify doubled down on spotlighting Pinays who empower fellow women through their platforms in the thriving audio industry. Kossy Ng, Spotify’s Head of Music in Asia, reiterates the need to give women and other communities a platform. In a panel discussion, she shares, “We are in the age of audio renaissance, and Spotify is conscious about surfacing the voices of women and underrepresented communities. No matter where you come from, everyone has a voice.”

Ng’s statement continuously holds as more Filipinas continue to shape a community in the audio industry, may it be in the the form of podcast or in ever-changing music scene. Numbers-wise, the platform saw an almost 70% increase in Filipina podcast listeners. Meanwhile, the platform's continuous initiative to zero in on women singers and musicians, the EQUAL playlists, saw a growth of almost 50% in participating artists.

Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals also extends to the people you listen to. We gravitate towards those whose visions align with us—from music, movies, TV shows and podcasts—to have an enjoyable listening experience. That’s why for the rest of Women’s Month, we’re putting these Pinays on loop.

Amazing Tunes by Pinays in Music

TALA GIL

Singer and songwriter TALA GIL is another young Pinay talent to look out for. Her smooth and buttery R&B songs coupled with her soft voice make a match made in heaven. Dreamy and hazy but awfully honest, TALA should be another mainstay in your playlists. One of the best compilations to introduce you to her work is the live session compilation of her EP, call me when you wake up.

Keiko Necesario

For March, Spotify's EQUAL Ambassador for the Month is acoustic and pop singer-songwriter Keiko Necesario. In the panel held last March 8th, she notes supporting the continuously expanding community of women on Spotify. “There is power in your voice, which encourages others to share and open up honest conversations. Putting your voice and music out on Spotify is gives people more opportunities and ownership to share perspectives that are diverse,” she expresses.
