Lessons I’ve Learned On Porn From Netflix

There’s a lot of porn on Netflix, my friends

My entire education leading up to college was an exclusive girls’ school experience—which was great, but entering the co-ed university life definitely opened my eyes to a few things. You get close to guys and the topics tend to shift from first kisses to losing your virginity, from dinner dates to motel dates.

There was one day, a blockmate of mine asked me if I had ever seen porn and I told him no. He then volunteered to send me something. He said no kinks, nothing disgusting, even called it sweet. Thank god he stayed true to his promise because the video I watched had no close ups, no slaps and nothing forceful. And that, my friends, was the first time I watched porn.

Since that fateful day in what I can now only estimate was 2011, I can’t say I’ve gone deep into the world of porn. But hey, the porn on Netflix has definitely piqued my interest—largely because it’s about what happens off-screen.

You have to be smart to thrive in porn

Most people think that people who join the porn industry aren’t the brightest of humans out there; that maybe they show themselves off because they don’t know how to do anything else. But the truth is that, from what I’ve seen, they have to be pretty damn smart to make it.

Making porn isn’t just about making someone’s fantasy come true. A large part about what makes the stars so successful is because they’ve mastered the art of their brand; they made themselves a business. They copyright their videos and make sure every view and download gives something back to them. They make sure that the money they get is invested in something else. And if they don’t see this early on, nothing happens in the long run.

There are some serious risks involved

I’m no expert, but I’m going to say the regular porno lasts less than an hour. The shooting, on the other hand, takes up some serious time. The risk here for the men is that they’re required to stay hard throughout the entire day. That usually means Viagra and Viagra has some serious side effects. There was one guy whose dick didn’t go down for 24 hours and, as he said on cam, he really felt like he was dying.

For women on the other hand, the risks range from penetration without enough lubrication to serious physical injuries.

It’s easy to get lost

One sad thing I’ve gathered from porn on Netflix is that amateurs—barely legal, sometimes not even of legal age—have it the hardest. Most of them just want to make a little money and help their families. Some of them don’t tell their parents and fear a relative coming across one of their videos. It’s a tough choice to enter, but it’s even more difficult to stay in.

I watched a story of a girl unfold: She was a stripper but hated the unsolicited touches from strange customers, so she went into porn knowing she could say yes and no to whatever she wanted. She was adamant about not doing boy-girl videos; she would do solos or girl-girl scenes. But even with the support of her housemates, she got lost in the money and the drugs and eventually caved in. On her last on-cam interview, she talks—straight-faced and emotionless—about how she “enjoyed” and “had fun” filming and how the internal physical pain was finally subsiding.

People pay for weird stuff

Porn films and scenes are scripted (sometimes badly), but cam girls are still around and thriving. They take requests from viewers and are paid to do things live—sometimes it’s as “simple” as taking off their dress or giving themselves a slap—but there’s also a lot of money being transacted there. And honestly, it’s only fair.

Still real people with real stories

When someone presents you with a fantasy, it’s hard to see them as anything other than that fantasy. You put them on a pedestal and sometimes forget the humanity in them. They’re a thing to look at and enjoy, something to perk up your social media feeds with. But as the porn on Netflix shows, as the documentaries prove, there is so much more to these stars than what we see.

The end product is nothing close to the reality. A friend of mine even said he might not be able to see porn the same again after hearing the real stories…I wonder how long that lasted though.

There are a lot of stories to be told and we’ll never be able to say we know something completely. But there’s a lot to be learned—you just need to want to see it.
