Prince Harry & Meghan Markle: A 3-month Check

Prince Harry & Meghan Markle: A 3-month Check

The Duke & Duchess of Sussex are celebrating a 3-month milestone

In April 2011, millions of us watched what we thought was a once-in-a-lifetime fairytale unfold as then-commoner Kate Middleton married Prince William, who was and still is second-in-line to the British throne. But then May 19, 2018 rolled around and we feasted our eyes on yet another fairy tale as American actress Meghan Markle married Prince Harry.

For many, Harry’s wedding marked a big step in the monarchy’s modernization. Not only was he marrying a commoner, he was marrying a biracial foreigner who had married and divorced someone else. And before you attack me for calling out her nationality, race and marriage status, understand that it matters—or used to matter—to the royal family. The only reason Queen Elizabeth was ever crowned, after all, is because her uncle gave up his right to the throne in exchange for the freedom to wed an American divorcee.

Needless to say, many were (and are) still skeptical about the wedding and marriage. But if you look at the last three wedded months, both Harry and Meghan have been doing quite well.

Introducing The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

Born Henry Charles Albert David, styled Prince Henry of Wales, Prince Harry officially became the Duke of Sussex on his wedding. Naturally, Meghan is not officially referred to as the Duchess of Sussex.

Their first public engagement

Just three days after their wedding, Prince Harry and Meghan had their first public engagement as a married couple for Prince Charles’ 70th birthday. The garden party at Buckingham Palace was attended by 6,000 people.

As they stood at the steps of the palace, it was clear how close Meghan is to the royal family—particularly the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker Bowles.

Buddies with The Queen

Proving that the Duchess of Sussex can hold her own without Harry, Meghan joined Queen Elizabeth II on June 14. The royals attended the opening of the Mersey Gateway Bridge in Cheshire and the Storyhouse Theater in Chester, as well as attended a lunch at the Chester Town Hall.

The Sentebale Polo Cup

The royal family goes to all sorts of charity events, but the Sentebale Polo Cup had Prince Harry partaking in the charity competition. The two even shared a quick kiss on stage.

The fifth-in-line’s baptism

On July 9, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle took a backseat and attended the christening of Prince Louis Arthur Charles.

For the future of the commonwealth

The Commonwealth Youth Forum is a series of workshops that focus on youth leaders. The Duchess of Sussex made particular waves with the attendees. “She was impressive to listen to, she was passionate about gender equality and women’s rights,” Ella Robertson told Vanity Fair. “She was determined to bring about change in the TV industry.”

#RoyalVisitIreland

For a two-day trip, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Ireland. Among other things, the royals attended a garden party at the British Ambassador’s residence, met with Irish President Michael Higgins and his wife, Sabina Coyne and visited the Famine Memorial by sculptor Rowan Gillespie.

The Mandela Exhibit

A month before her birthday, Meghan and Prince Harry attended an exhibit on Nelson Mandela’s life. Held at the Southbank Centre’s Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition, the two watched a performance by the South African choir, as well as a tour of the artifacts from Mandela’s historic life. The two also met with the anti-apartheid icon’s granddaughter, Zamaswazi Dlamini-Mandela.

There have been, of course, other engagements between those earlier discussed, but there’s no point trying to deny it: Meghan Markle has been wowing both the royal family and her adoring public. And with Prince Harry at her side, there seems to be no stopping her.

Let’s face it: Another power couple—this one with royal ties—has been born.
