Queer Eye Season 5: Inspiring & Eye-Opening, As Always

As Tan always says: Are you ready, boys?

It’s Pride & Independence month over in our corner, and we’re zeroing in on the former with Netflix’s fifth season of Queer Eye. Jonathan Van Ness, Antoni Porowski, Tan France, Bobby Berk and Karamo Brown are back, ladies and gents—and we could not be more thrilled at the timing.

Sure, sure. It doesn’t take a genius to find out why Netflix released the new season on Pride month, but you only need to see the first episode to realize just how relevant the content is, Pride month or not.

Season 5 opened with an episode entitled Preaching Out Loud, where the boys worked their magic on a Lutheran pastor, Noah. When Noah begins to tell us about his journey—how he married a woman he admired, how his wife was the first person he came out to, how he had struggled with the balance of being open about his sexuality while wearing his clerical collar—it’s a strong and immediate connection.

For queer men and women who have felt disowned by the religion they grew up with and loved, it’s a reminder that there are growing corners that not only tolerate, but accept different lifestyles. And for those of us that have never had to struggle with coming out, it’s a lesson on compassion. For anyone and everyone, it’s an effective look at what it’s like to wear someone else’s shoes and how a little understanding can go a long way.

The episodes that follow aren’t as heavy on the heart (at least for me), but they’re still very much what the world needs more of. A little bit of fun, a little bit of conversation and a lot of stories to tell. Some dogs, a wedding and some outright activism.

As always, there are the moments that are signature to Queer Eye: Jonathan gushing about how beautiful everyone is, Antoni cooking up a storm, Tan reminding us all that style is not a far reach from our comfort zones, Bobby making a haven out of every ugly corner, Kamaro being extra to show us that there is more to life than we already know.

Is the equation getting old? Maybe so. But I love these men, and I love everyone they introduce me to. And in case you haven’t already fallen down this rabbit hole, here’s your formal invitation: Queer Eye season 5 is ready for streaming on Netflix.

Don’t blame me if you suddenly find the sun is setting though.
