Wanderland Goes Virtual in 2020

Remembering seven years of live music—and celebrating the festival's first year online

Wanderland, the Philippines' biggest annual music festival, is going virtual. Now on its seventh year, Karpos Multimedia is bringing the event to an even wider audience on October 24, 4PM. With a little help from the GlobeOne app's Globe Virtual Hangouts feature, the festival is breaking down borders and reaching international audiences.

Despite going online, this year's run is just as exciting as the ones that preceded it. But before cutting to the chase, we're doing a little reminiscing.

The first ever Wanderland music festival happened on May 18, 2013 at the Globe Circuit Events Grounds. Featured bands back then were The Temper Trap, Neon Trees, Nada Surf, Avalanche City, Colour Coding, Tully on Tully, Up Dharma Down, Yolanda Moon, Pulso, She's Only Sixteen and Taken By Cars.

The following year, 2014, saw the festival being held at the same venue. Bands who performed included The Drums, The Paper Kites, Last Dinosaurs, The Royal Concept, Lucy Rose, Architecture in Helsinki, Woody Pitney, Franco, The Ransom Collective, Brisom, Techy Romantics, and Chocolate Grass.

Wanderland's third and fourth years were ones for the books. The 2015 run had Kid Cudi as the headliner and paved the way for the comeback of local band Hale. Also, in the lineup of performers was American rock band Augustana, RAC, Youngblood Hawke, Lewis Watson, DJ Fxxxyblnt, CRWN. In 2016, Death Cab for Cutie and indie-folk band Bon Iver took the stage, along with The Naked and Famous, San Cisco, Panama, Blackbird Blackbird, Chad Valley and Commandeur. CRWN came back, this time with Jess Connelly. The rest of the local lineup was made up of acts we still love watching to this day: Curtismith, Cheats, Jensen and The Flips, and Oh, Flamingo.

Dubbed Wanderland Jungle, the 2017 iteration of the festival was the first to take place at the Filinvest City Event Grounds in  Alabang. That year, the acts were Purity Ring, Up Dharma Down, former Wonder cover guys HONNE, LANY, Woodlock, Gab and John of UrbanDub, Tom's Story, Fools and Foes, Reese Lansangan, Lola Amour, Banna Herbera, and Mickey Sulit. Apart from the live music, live art installations and performances from Jappy Agoncillo, Ysabella Lalu, KFK Collective, and Quatro Hapimeel.

On March 10, 2018, Kodaline jumpstarted the line-up. A perfect combo if there was ever one, Grammy-nominated Jhené Aiko was the co-headliner for the Wanderland stage that year.

French multi-instrumentalist, singer, and musician FKJ (who we watched at Karpos LIVE last year!) treated the audience to infectious beats. Bag Raiders', a duo from the land down under, performed their hits Shooting Stars and Checkmate Checkmate. Canadian R&B and soul singer-songwriter Daniel Caesar and Lauv sealed the deal—but the local roster was just as exciting. The list of homegrown performers included IV of Spades, Ben&Ben, Asch and Jess Connelly. Award-winning local rapper, and songwriter Quest, best known for his hopeless romantic hit Walang Hanggan, also made an appearance

It only made sense for Wanderland to stretch on for two days in 2019. Last year, the festival brought an amazing lineup of artists centerstage: Irish indie-rock band Two Door Cinema Club, The Kooks, HONNE, Masego, JMSN, SG Lewis, Mac Ayres, Alina Baraz, Gabrielle Aplin, Clairo, joan, PREP, Charlie Lim and would-be Karpos LIVE performers, Adoy. The 2019 lineup of locals might just be our favorite, with the likes of Unique Salonga, Reese Lansangan, Clara Benin, Autotelic, Dayaw and Sandwich taking us through all the feelings.

Today, the annual music and arts festival has taken on a new form. Going online as WANDERLAND: HOME COURT, Karpos is showing that they aren't ones to back out due to pandemic—and that neither are music lovers.

Wanderers will get the chance to relive never-before-seen sets from Wanderland 2019 artists—HONNE (UK), Masego (USA), and joan (USA) on October 24, 4PM—via Globe Virtual Hangouts. This season’s brand new live performances by Phum Viphurit (TH), Lola Amour (PH), & Rusty Machines (PH) are also worth streaming for.

Globe Virtual Hangouts is accessible via the GlobeOne app.
