The Teas You Need For All Your Needs

The different types of tea you’ll want in your arsenal

Story time.

In 2737 BC, a Chinese emperor by the name of Shen Nung was taking a walk in the countryside. When he got tired, he decided to sit beneath a tree and boil himself a cup of water to drink. As the wind blew, the tree leaves fell upon his cup, flavored the water and turned it a golden color.

Emperor Shen Nung enjoyed the new drink so much that he refilled his cup.

Now, tea is known around the world because of its intrinsic characteristics: It’s good for the body, has many benefits and is available in so many blends that you’re bound to find one that caters to your tastes.

That said, there are particular blends that target and improve different aspects of our lives. You know that green tea is good for your skin, helps balance blood sugar and that every drop is filled with antioxidants and nutrients. Meanwhile, black tea is great for balanced aging. Then there’s oolong tea, which is great for the heart, brain, bone and teeth.

But the lesser-known blends that pack the same punch? We thought you’d never ask.

Rooibos Tea

Also known as red tea or red bush tea, rooibos tea is caffeine-free and tends to have lower levels of tannin (a natural compound present in leather and ink manufacturing). Moreover, it contains no amount of oxalic acid, which could increase the risk of kidney stones.

But what it actually does to the body is that it helps protect cells from damage of free radicals. Thinking long term, regular consumption of rooibos tea can significantly decrease the risk of heart disease and cancer.

Genmaicha Tea

Genmaicha tea is basically brown rice tea, which contains selenium (an important mineral that regulates thyroid hormones). It also helps improve blood flow, decrease bloating, detoxify your body and improve brain function.

And for those that have asthma, genmaicha tea could be your best friend.

Chai Tea

While it’s actually a blend of black tea, ginger and other spices, chai tea has become really popular—particularly its latte form. What’s great though is that chai tea isn’t only delicious; it’s perfectly healthy as well.

The ingredients found in chai tea have proven themselves effective in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol. Moreover, consumption has proven to reduce blood pressure as well.

The list of the different types of tea, of course, is much longer and their different benefits even more so. There are blends out there that intertwine different ingredients from different countries to form a flavor that’s unique and rich—and there’s one for us Pinoys in particular: Paradise Blend.

Created by tea master David De Candia and debuted at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf’s Discover Tea event, the blend infuses flavors of mango, carrot and oranges. At its base, it’s a rooibos tea, so you know you’re getting all the good stuff as well.
