How To Beat Cabin Fever And This Heat

Get moving with some help from adidas Heat.RDY

Who else is feeling the sweltering summer heat in what’s supposed to be the chilly Ber season? This erratic weather, nearly 7 months into lockdown, and ~everything~ else makes it easy to fall in a slump. We’re all for giving ourselves a break, but it takes effort and motivation to keep ourselves in a healthy headspace. So here, tips to beat cabin fever and this heat:

Get Movin’

Get moving, even when you don’t want to. It’ll help reduce those stress hormones and boost your mood. It can be as simple as getting up from a seated position every hour.

Got time? There’s a surplus of at-home workout videos you can try on YouTube, including Wonder’s Work (Out) From Home With Nikki Torres, which you can do on your own or with your fit fam. But if you’re looking for something more interactive and with a coach to help you power through a workout, try online classes by The Movement Studio (TMS) or Plana FORMA.

I tried a cardio and strength training session with TMS while test driving adidas’ latest Heat.RDY collection. Designed to optimize performance even in the hottest of days and toughest of workouts, Heat.RDY keeps your body cool before, during and after a sweat session. Because it reacts to the body, body temperature is regulated through side shuffles, crab toe touches and Russian twists. The lightweight fabric also dries fast and encourages airflow, so you don’t have to worry about adjusting your gear (which I am guilty of) during a workout.

Get Some Air

If you can, take a walk outside (with a mask and face shield on ?). Your mind and body will benefit from the great outdoors as it increases vitamin D levels in your system and improves concentration—especially when you’re in the company of Mother Nature.

Talk About It

We live in such trying times and we’re all dealing with the circumstances best as we can. But when the burden gets too heavy to carry alone, you need to let it out. Talk to a family member, a friend, someone you trust whom you can share your unfiltered feelings with. Because acknowledging our shared reality and everything that comes with it is part of how we can better cope with our new normal. It’s also good to keep things light and talk about whatever sparks joy for you. Who knows it might just bring someone else joy.

Spend Some Time IRL

These days, we spend most of our lives online, whether for school, for work or for groceries. But it’s important to switch off and spend time away from the screen to do other things. Pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read, learn a new skill and find ways to express your creativity that doesn’t involve your gadgets.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated not only improves your mood, it also helps curb the sweet or salty cravings you get in the middle of the afternoon and/or at night. And that headache you’ve been getting? Might be because you don’t have enough water in your system. Experts recommend drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. More if you workout regularly or when it’s hot.
