The Lessons We Learned In 2017

It was—to put it mildly—a year of ups and downs

A few years from now, we’ll probably look back at 2017 and think nothing much of it. Sure, we’ll recall a few key moments that almost broke us, but they definitely won’t have that same effect. We’ll vaguely remember an instant of success, but it won’t bring the same joy—hopefully, because it will pale in comparison to what we still have ahead of us.

But no matter what the road has in store, we do have a few life lessons we hope to never forget (or have to relearn the hard way).

Differences are inevitable, but it’s up to us to act against or in favor of it

person sitting next to you

Not one person is the same and no matter how many decades pass, there will still be lines of race, nationality, social standing, religion and education that are blaringly obvious to anyone that wants to take a look. You will never be the same as the person sitting next to you, but how you handle those differences are completely up to you.

Whether or not you react in good or bad faith is your choice.

Moving on is a constant effort—keep at it

The past is a tempting place to visit, mostly because you see it in hindsight. You know what you could have done better, you have bits of information you didn’t before and you know what you should have avoided. In this sense, moving on is a conscious effort that never stops. You need to constantly remind yourself that the past has no place in your future—or your present.

Starting over is a scary but worthwhile process

Whether it means in love, live or career, starting over is often times scary to look at head-on. It means letting go of whatever has made you comfortable and what has helped keep you alive all these years. But sometimes starting over is necessary, because it’s the only way we’ll actually get to live.

Starting over is not dependent on age or situation—you just need to be courageous enough to take that first step. It is, without a doubt, scary AF, but you’ll thank yourself later on.

People will surprise you (go with it)

Don’t deny it; we all judge people based on different things—style, manner of speaking, poise, how they take their coffee. It’s practically human nature, something we can’t help but think about once in a while. But whatever your thoughts, don’t let it stop you from getting to know the people that inspire them.

People will surprise you, so let them. Let them take you on an adventure, let them open your eyes, let them share their stories and let them listen to yours.

Don’t be too hard on yourself

Forgiveness is a great thing—especially when you learn how and when to give it to yourself. There’s only so much that you can do and you need to accept that, because you of all people need some slack and a break once in a while. And who better give that to yourself than you?

When you think about it, 2017 wasn’t so bad, right? Almost nothing ever is.
