The adidas D.O.N. Issue 3 Makes A Compelling Case For Local Form & Function

Locally and thoughtfully designed, say hello to the adidas D.O.N. Issue 3

Following the successful release of the adidas Philippines x Jappy Agoncillo tee collaboration, Manila Hoops, we now have the adidas D.O.N. Issue 3—locally and thoughtfully designed by the man of the hour, muralist and illustrator Jappy Agoncillo.

The adidas D.O.N. Issue 3 is a special edition release of NBA star Donovan Mitchell’s signature basketball shoe. D.O.N. stands for Determination Over Negativity—a saying that has become synonymous with Mitchell. The collaboration with Jappy was obvious, and the design itself speaks volumes of his craft and passion. It encompasses his love for superhero comic books, the own heroic story of Mitchell, and the connection that these two have.

The wing tip icon is a conscious design choice that pays homage to Mitchell’s college team, the Louisville Carnivals. The Determination Over Negativity tiger stripes are two-edged, representing Jappy’s signature mark and Mitchell’s middle school team, the Greenwich Country Day School Tigers. Meanwhile, the sock liners feature illustrations of Charlie Parker and Louis Armstrong, which acts as a nod to the Utah Jazz.

And perhaps the most obvious connection between Donovan Mitchell and the Philippines: the outsoles of the adidas D.O.N Issue 3 features a map of Elmsford, New York (Mitchell’s home state) on the right shoe, and a map of Manila on the left. To finish things off, the text on the shoe's laces read Determination Over Negativity.

“The concept of the design is about honoring the past and looking towards the future,” explains Jappy. “Taking inspiration from how D.O.N. was named after Donovan Mitchell’s ‘Determination Over Negativity’ mantra, the design pays homage not only to the history of wins and losses of Donovan, but also the endless possibilities that the future has in store with continuous hard work and determination.”

Meanwhile, adidas Philippines Brand Communications and Sports Marketing Manager, JD Cortez, further emphases that, “We at adidas Philippines know and value the importance of being true to one’s roots. Furthermore, the brand truly wants to stay consistent; to inspire and empower local talent.”
