Made in Manila, Made for the World: adidas Launches Filipino-Designed Harden Vol.5

The adidas Harden Vol. 5's “Manila Heritage” colorway is designed by renowned toy designer and visual artist Quiccs

As a nation, it's undeniable that we Filipinos live and breathe basketball. Our deep sense of community is highlighted in makeshift courts in barangays and weekly live streams with passionate fans while we cheer on our respective teams.

To celebrate the Philippines' 123rd Independence Day on June 12, adidas launched the first-ever Filipino-designed adidas footwear: the Harden Vol. 5 Manila Heritage. In collaboration with toy designer and visual artist, Juanito “Quiccs” Maiquez, the brand new colorway of the Harden Vol. 5—the pinnacle product for adidas Basketball—aims to disrupt the market and pave the way for more local artists.

Impossible is nothing for the Filipino designer, an independent artist and “super random kid in the Philippines.” Since day one, he has incorporated the global brand in his toys, specifically the adidas Superstar “popularized by Run-D.M.C.,” with a plethora of his work inspired by the hip-hop and graffiti culture.

In an exclusive press event, Quiccs expounds on the main inspiration behind the colorway. “In its core, the main inspiration of the shoe is Manila Killa: TEQ63, my character, which wears the symbol of our Philippine flag. As you can see in the shoe, the main colors are red, blue, yellow and white—yellow for pag-asa (hope), blue for [freedom], and red for sanduguan (blood).”

The Filipino-designed adidas footwear release has more meticulous details paying homage to the country and the Brooklyn Nets superstar player. Keep an eye out for the Philippine flag’s Three Stars representing the three island groups Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao and the Philippine country code +63. Also worth looking out for: 06.26.19, James Harden's last visit to Manila; Quiccs' signature character, TEQ63; and a Quiccs-ified character of the basketball player.

The Harden Vol. 5 “Manila Heritage” saw its NBA debut at the recent Brooklyn Nets-Boston Celtics game as worn by James Harden himself. The basketball footwear release will also come with new Quiccs-designed tees, featuring a “Quiccs-ified” animated James Harden.
