Let June be the month you start building self-pride

We officially made it to the last leg of the first half of the year, and that’s something to be proud of. Likewise, the month of June reminds us of the many things we can be proud of—our heritage, our culture and ourselves. Looking back at our past allows us to appreciate the present and the progress we’ve made. This year alone, Filipino pride Dolly de Leon caught the attention of international critics and award-giving bodies for her role as Abigail in Triangle of Sadness. Meanwhile, Wonder celebrated five years of telling stories by and for the Filipino youth while stirring conversations and offering fresh perspectives. This month, we’re also putting the spotlight on young, proud and free individuals and their contributions to the queer community. May their stories inspire you to live life in unabashed color.

Now, what of ourselves? June calls for us to celebrate what pride means to each one of us, too. Self-pride is knowing who you are and what your worth is without being ashamed of it. However, many of us were raised to think that to be proud is a negative quality. That pride, which is commonly confused with unregulated ego, is synonymous to arrogance or vanity. But just as we compliment and praise others, so should we give ourselves credit. Downplaying oneself takes away your power thus, robbing yourself of the rewards you truly deserve.

A healthy amount of pride or strong sense of self is to feel comfortable in your own skin, to give yourself permission to take up space and to empower others.

Now while I have you, here are style news, tried and tested products and retail therapy recommendations that might bring you joy as you make your way through the month.

So, how about it? Let June be that month you start building self-pride.
