The Editor’s Style Edit: April 2023

In Q1, there were plenty of opportunities to meet new people and learn new things, particularly in style—or beauty, fashion and lifestyle. Read all about it in this month's The Editor's Style Edit

A new season, a new quarter, a new month. Every new start presents an opportunity to start afresh. It is, after all, spring (or at least in other parts of the world it is), which spells new beginnings and transformations. The past few months have been a whirlwind ride for many, including us at Wonder. We found ourselves struggling to keep up with our own beat (is it the post-pandemic rush?). It’s also easy to get lost in the grind, get overwhelmed by the mountain of tasks at hand and give in to the pressure to deliver, deliver, deliver. But a teammate recently reminded me to take a pause because doing so can help bring us closer to the finish line.

There’s no quick fix, and grind culture takes time to unlearn. But there are ways to overcome mental overload and stress. Write, do some spring cleaning, find time for things that you love. Finding joy in what you do helps, too. You don’t have to like or love everything about your job, but there must be something that keeps you clocking in every day—the people, the chance to bring ideas to life or discover something new.

And in the first quarter of the year, there were plenty of opportunities to do just that: meet new people and learn new things, particularly in style—or beauty, fashion and lifestyle—where the tides change faster than the norm.

Empowered women take good care of themselves

Empowered women take good care of themselves. If you’re looking to replenish or upgrade your self-care routine for the summer, Rustan's The Beauty Source has something for you. My personal picks include L'Occitane Shea Collection, which helps lock in moisture and is packed with good-for-the-skin ingredients, like omega 3 and 6, and vitamin E, Phyto’s Phytoprogenium Ultra Gentle Shampoo and Detangling Milk, an ultra-gentle hair-care range that maintains balance in the scalp and provides anti-frizz protection, and Deborah Lippmann The Cure Cuticle Repair Cream and the Deborah Lippmann It’s A Miracle Intense Cuticle Therapy Oil, for healthy-looking cuticles and nails.

And no self-care routine or summer kit is complete without a spritz of something fresh (especially in this heat!). Try this: Diptyque L’Eau Papier Eau de Toilette, a musky fragrance that celebrates imagination and spontaneity. If adventure had a scent, this might just be it.

Love, Bonito

Invites us women to be #FeminineAndProud

Love, Bonito empowers its community to be #FeminineAndProud with month-long activations themed around “Femininity is Power.” Love, Bonito is a proud advocate of uplifting women and, this year, the brand’s campaign aims to inspire women to embrace femininity on their own terms, and redefine societal expectations of roles that were traditionally more female-centric.

Across the month, Love, Bonito will spotlight inspiring Asian women from varying industries, highlighting the ways they have broken barriers in the fields of feminine health and wellness, female for future and women's rights. Fans of the brand can also look forward to the limited-edition International Women’s Day caps with fun interchangeable patches that aims to physically represent the many hats a woman wears.

“When I first became a full-time entrepreneur, I was not taken seriously as a young, female trying to grow Love, Bonito to the global stage. I had a burning passion to pursue my dream, and saw femininity as my strength to take on any challenge—no matter how unconventional and how difficult,” says Rachel Lim, Co-Founder of Love, Bonito. “I hope that my journey serves as inspiration for both men and women to break down gender norms, and ultimately, groom a generation where femininity is not just accepted, but celebrated and valued.”

Be part of the LB Community via Love, Bonito’s website and enjoy US$15 off with a minimum spend of US$70 on your first order.

SpeakOut for Safe Spaces with Avon

The brand drives awareness and takes action against violence against women

Violence against women affects 1 in 3 Filipino women. At some point in a woman’s life, she will experience some type of physical, emotional or sexual violence by her partner. While there are laws and policies that protect survivors—around 41% do not at all seek help, 20% share experiences only with trusted people, and a little over 30% seek help from authorities.

When survivors talk about the abuse they’ve experienced and when women call for accountability online, they are often met with guilt-tripping, gaslighting and other threats normalized by society. With the prevalence of violence against women, there has been a need to create a strong response to the lack of safe spaces for women and to build conversations focused on their rights, and safety online and offline.

As part of their commitment to raise awareness on this issue, Avon supports the move to create safe spaces with an informational and educational campaign on gender-based violence. Avon’s latest contribution to the movement is to provide information culminating in a celebration that calls for change and raises funds for Avon’s partner organizations called SpeakOut for Safe Spaces.

The Editor’s Style Edit: April 2023

In collaboration with Notorious Concepts, Avon will be hosting activities in their establishments to encourage fun and safe partying in the midst of Metro Manila’s infamous nightlife scene. Avon, together with Notorious Concepts, will be introducing The Pink Drink as part of the fundraising partnership. For each Pink Drink sold, 5% of sales will be donated to partner NGOs committed to ending violence against women and girls.

Beyond raising awareness and donating funds, the event series will also launch direct efforts to help women and communities speak out against violence. Throughout each partner establishment, Avon will place collaterals that inform women of safe words to discreetly alert others of any potentially unsafe situations.

Join the cause by participating in the call to SpeakOut for Safe Spaces on April 11, 13, and 16 in Alamat Poblacion, HQ Poblacion and Japonesa Poblacion, respectively.

Flormar

Embrace the happiness makeup makes you feel

Turkish cosmetics brand Flormar fully embraces the joy one gets from playing around with colors and turning one’s face into a work of art. Known to be one of the fastest growing makeup brands in color cosmetics, Flormar offers a wide range of makeup, as well as nail polish, in an assortment of hues that one can happily use to express oneself.

“Our goal at Flormar is to stir up that wonderful feeling we get from the ritual of putting on makeup whenever, wherever, however we want and feel like it. Color your way, color yourself happy,” explains Angie Goyena, president of ZFace, Inc.

The Editor’s Style Edit: April 2023

It comes as no surprise then that Flormar Philippines signed on award-winning artists Morissette and KZ Tandingan, who both perfectly embody the brand’s mission. Both globally recognized artists are also known to be experimental with their beauty looks, unafraid to color with bold and subdued hues—something that Flormar encourages.

Flormar offers a complete range for the face, eyes, lips and nails that are all cruelty-free and at friendly price points, ranging from P79 to P849. With Flormar, you get to color yourself happy. And happiness looks good on everyone.

Ultherapy by Merz Aesthetics

The basics for those of us new to this aesthetic science

Ultherapy is a safe, time-tested ultrasound energy that lifts and tightens skin naturally without surgery or downtime. It uses the power of ultrasound to deliver a collagen-boosting effect. To explain further, the energy from the treatment initiates the body’s natural response to stimulate the growth of fresh, new collagen and strengthen weak collagen.

Unlike lasers, radio frequency, surgery and other technologies, non-surgical Ultherapy bypasses the surface of the skin to deliver the right amount of ultrasound energy at the right depths and the right temperature to give you your desired results. Now while some patients see an initial effect right after their treatment, the real results appear over two to three months as new collagen builds, gradually lifting and tightening skin on the face and neck, and smoothing skin on the chest. From what I learned at The Editor’s Room of The Beauty Edit, results may last up to two years.

While Ultherapy does not duplicate the results of a facelift, it’s an exciting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery and for patients who wish to extend the effects of cosmetic surgery.

Sculptra

“Filipinos typically start losing collagen as early as mid-30s…With the launch of Sculptra, [Filipinos] will have better chances of maintaining a natural youthful look and glow.”

Galderma, a leader in medical aesthetics, just announced the launch of Sculptra, the original collagen biostimulator and treatment that offers non-invasive and long-lasting solution for skin rejuvenation. Sculptra, made from a biocompatible material called poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), has been used in medical devices for decades and is well-known for its safety and effectiveness. The treatment involves a series of injections that are typically spaced out over several months with results (restored volume and improved contours and folds) that can last up to two years or more.

The Editor’s Style Edit: April 2023

“Filipinos typically start losing collagen as early as mid-30s; our skin starts to show signs of aging such as wrinkles, sagging and lackluster complexion,” says Dr. Yu Ming Huang, a board-certified dermatologist and adjunct attending physician at the National Taiwan University – Children’s Hospital. “With the launch of Sculptra in the Philippines, people will have better chances of maintaining a natural youthful look and glow.”

While traditional fillers tend to provide merely temporary results, Sculptra provides a non-invasive treatment that does not require any downtime, making it the top choice for patients who are looking for a convenient and effective way to improve their appearance.

Sculptra is now available at Galderma partner clinics in the Philippines.

The Editor’s Style Edit: April 2023

Seiko

Seiko Premium Boutique opens with covetable new collections to boot. Who else is excited about the Seiko 5?

Seiko Premium Boutique, which houses Grand Seiko and Seiko timepieces, opens a new store at the ground floor of Mitsukoshi Mall in BGC. The new Seiko Premium Boutique carries a wide range of timepieces, including some of the latest creations for the Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary, as well as more of the limited edition timepieces arriving in the coming months.

The newest Seiko watches commemorate the 110th Anniversary of the brand’s watchmaking and draw inspiration from the brand’s rich technological and design heritage. The Presage Craftsmanship Series is a nod to the traditional Japanese crafts and features vivid watch dials. For the special anniversary series, Seiko is presenting a limited-edition Presage watch four different materials available starting June 2023.

Meanwhile, the King Seiko unveils a new collection: the SPB365, which has a gradient dial inspired by a traditional Japanese geometric pattern known as Kikkoumon. Joining the latest editions is a Prospex diver’s watch, which borrows inspiration from the polar landscape.

There will be more limited edition collections to watch out for, including Seiko 5 Sports’ collaboration with Masked Rider. To create the collaboration model, the design of the original watch worn by Hongo was upgraded with modern technology and materials, along with design cues that reference the Masked Rider 1. Coming in May is the classic 1970 Seiko design that pays homage to the Japanese adventurer Naomi Uemura and in June, a new movement for the time-tested 6R family.

More’s in store for long-time fans of the brand. Drop by the new Seiko Premium Boutique at the G/F of Mitsukoshi Mall in BGC.

Longchamp

The French label’s Spring/ Summer 2023 collection is both glamorous and nomadic

This season, Longchamp is in a fresh state of mind and takes inspiration from Glamping. Glamorous and nomadic, the collection captures femininity expressed in daring combinations of fabrics, prints and styles. It also explores two contrasting but complementary styles.

The first borrows from nature, travel and authenticity to reflect the woman’s adventurous spirit, ready to explore new paths. She takes with her Longchamp’s floral-printed dress and flower-embroidered, straw-effect Le Pliage. The second plays with contrast in a festive, glamorous and sporty energy. This chic and sporty woman opts for graphic prints on silk and linen, as well as swimsuits with asymmetric cutouts underneath cozy knits.

The collection is punctuated with leather goods, which range from elegantly understated to bold eye-catching. This is seen in the reimagination of Longchamp’s iconic Roseau bag in cotton and linen smattered with polka dots, and the Box-Trot line in zesty lemon and candy-pink colorways. Meanwhile, new formats also make their debut: a small vanity case and a mini handheld bag ideal for spontaneous getaways.

Lastly, an unexpected summer collaboration is Fatboy x Longchamp, which presents an inflatable armchair in recycled polyester. It features an outside pocket with cowhide leather flap from the emblematic Le Pliage bag.

Longchamp’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection is now available to shop.
