5 Looks From TV and Film We’d Love to Wear to Chromatica

5 Looks From TV and Film We’d Love to Wear to Chromatica

Daydreaming about our fictional Chromatican wardrobe

Since the release of Lady Gaga’s Chromatica, it has been the one album on blast at home (to the initial delight of family members, which has now morphed into––still pleasant, I think?––satiation). I mean, LG6 taking place on its own dystopian planet? Where equality rules and no one thing is greater than another? A sensational new era for the artist. And right through all political injustices amid the global pandemic here on Earth, a timely concept.

It’s the stuff of fiction, sure, but I very much enjoy the idea of Chromatica. One Twitter account, United States of Chromatica, even paints an excellent picture of it with amusing hypotheticals and hilarious laws of the land. (Just a small source of joy that has kept me holding out for hope, so hey, I’ll take it.)

Imagine Ariana Grande as Chromatican Vice President, Carly Rae Jepsen as First Official Secretary of State and Trixie Mattel as Chromatican Secretary of Homeland Security. Imagine a land where Gaga’s top-tier crying-in-the-club dance tracks fill the air, bisexuals are not required to pay taxes and transphobia is a high crime punishable by an eternity of drifting off into outer space.

Ah yes, we would gladly apply for citizenship and head over––Chromatican wardrobe packed and in tow, too. After rustling through the file cabinet of pop culture references in our brains for Chromatica-perfect looks, here’s what we’ve come up with.

The airline check-in attendant and crew uniform in The Fifth Element

There is no doubt that the retro-future costumes designed by Jean-Paul Gaultier in The Fifth Element would blend right in on Chromatica. Our top pick: the airline personnel uniform. We imagine this paired with high boots from GCDS Fall 2020. For beauty, a Jem and the Holograms makeup look and body makeup painted on to look like gloves (an idea from the Maison Margiela Fall 2019 couture show). Here’s what we imagine workwear in Chromatica looks like:

Victoria Beckham’s look in the Holler music video

It’s almost a cliché for a person in fashion to say that their favorite Spice Girl is Posh Spice, but here we are. Of all of V. Beckham’s looks, the one in the Holler music video sticks out as an all-time favorite. The all-black outfit, the latex armbands, the laced-up tube top: a potential Chromatica tribe look? We think so. We’d go harder with the hardware, though, with earrings by Austin James Smith, sunglasses by GLVSS Eyewear and a cut-out leather top from Barragán’s Spring 2017 collection.

Raja’s final runway in the Queens in Space episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race

There’s not much else we would take away from or add to this. Raja’s robot-queen-who-fell-to-Chromatica look is stellar as is. But to bring things closer to home, a shoe swap to Alexander McQueen’s Armadillo boot may be in order (a nod to The Fame Monster era, too). As for beauty, we’d gladly take cues from Euphoria makeup artist Doniella Davy, who created Jules Vaughn’s Halloween look in The Next Episode episode.

Persephone’s latex dress in The Matrix Reloaded

The costume design in The Matrix franchise will continue to be referenced and revived. Typically what comes to mind are slick floor-length coats, black latex looks––Trinity’s, to be specific––and very ‘90s oval eyewear. But we would rather borrow from Persephone’s wardrobe for our trip to Chromatica (first dibs on this cream latex dress by costume designer Kym Barrett). To update the look, we’re thinking accessories from the Balmain Spring 2019 couture show and an oversized coat from Christian Dior Fall 2003.

All of Jane Fonda’s bodysuits in Barbarella

Who better to bring fashion’s Space Age obsession into film than Paco Rabanne? The designer came up with six retro sci-fi bodysuits for Jane Fonda in the 1968 film––all equally noteworthy, it would be difficult to bring just one. So here’s two: the chain-mail suit with sheer black tights and the black bodysuit with the plastic chest plate. Either could be accessorized further with m0nirath gloves. Metallics could also be played up with a Marc Jacobs coat from his Fall 2020 collection. We can’t quite let go of the Barbarella hair, so zhuzhing it to replicate the beauty look at Christian Lacroix Spring 2009 is a sound compromise.

As much as we like to daydream about Chromatica and create posts like this for fun, here on Earth, political unrest is at an all-time high.
