New Label Alert: ANTONINA

New Label Alert: ANTONINA

The eponymous brand of emerging designer Nina Amoncio makes its debut for Spring/Summer 2022

Since presenting her graduation collection in 2018, Filipino fashion designer Nina Amoncio has more than given us reason to keep an eye out. This rings just as true in 2021, where the promising young talent has introduced a ready-to-wear offering for the very first time.

The ANTONINA Spring 2022 collection, presented and made available to shop online at www.anto-nina.com, features 26 pieces ranging from muscle tees, twill trousers and pleated skirts to bandana tops, trench coats and spandex gloves. Entitled WALANG PAMAGAT, Amoncio’s new body of work notably is rendered purely in black and cream. It’s with this pared-down palette that her strong suits like construction, fabric manipulation and thoughtful layering become a focal point. Closer inspection shows subtle printed running stitches digitally designed by local graphic artist Felicity Gali, too.

All in all, WALANG PAMAGAT from ANTONINA is a slight departure from her previous projects, but a welcome one: going full-tilt streetwear without Amoncio losing the sensibilities that made her a designer to watch.

Past collections, according to Amoncio, were a strong reference in creating the collection. Taking with her the tried and tested silhouettes and techniques, she found ways to translate them into pieces that reflected her current disposition as a creative.

On the deliberate mismatching of patterns and placements of several clothing details, Amoncio added that these elements show the imbalances and her “feelings rotating in limbo.” A quiet testament to what a lot of artists are going through—and how this can become a creative fuel for their next chapter. Ahead, peruse ANTONINA’s WALANG PAMAGAT catalog.

Nina Amoncio got her start in fashion as a graduate of the University Of The Philippines Diliman Clothing Technology program. In 2019, she participated at Bench Fashion Week as a finalist at the BENCH Design Awards 2019. Her collection from the competition was also presented at Rakuten Fashion Week TOKYO Spring 2020, which only further cemented her place in the fashion industry.

Before debuting her ready-to-wear collection, Amoncio was also known for her collaborative streetwear project ANOTO, created with fellow fashion designers and friends Mary Faye Murphy and Bea Ticsay.
