Ugly Pretty Looks We Want to Wear from the Fall/Winter 2018 Runways

Because who cares what others think, right?

Say what you want, but we’re thoroughly convinced: traditional pretty has long stopped being the only kind of pretty the public wants to subscribe to. While the blonde-hair-blue-eyes formula still sells in the West like mestiza looks are still lauded in our own country, there is now considerably more wiggle room in the once too-tight box of beauty standards.

These days, we’re all over the unique, the awkward, the flawed. Things that were once so desperately concealed or kept under wraps—scars, stretch marks, body hair, you name it—are spotlighted and deemed deserving of their own Instagram posts. Ugly shoes aren’t treated very ugly at all. They’re lusted after and sell out even with sky-high price tags attached to them.

Welcome to the ugly pretty revolution, a movement that’s here to stay for a while, if the Fall/Winter 2018 runways are any indication. Up ahead, find some of our favorite looks from this season’s trend roster.

You know that look of judgment your parents give you when you step outside your room in a fit they don’t… quite understand? We sort of love that and you can expect to receive that look in profusion with hats and headwear like these. The fainter of heart can start with Prada’s textured bucket hats or Isa Arfen’s supersized berets. Erdem’s dotty tulle mask seems like a good idea for when we’re feeling a little creative and within walking distance of a crafts store. As for Gucci’s sparkly situation… that one we’re bookmarking for special occasions (read: costume parties or when we’re really looking to provoke for the heck of it.)

Print on print is a common fashion fear, but this season encourages us to kick our worries to the curb. Who cares if florals don’t match stripes? Certainly not Richard Quinn! If the runways are empowering us to pair scarf prints and paisley with literally everything else, who are we to refuse?

The days of shunning animal print are over. Okay, so full-on leopard print or tiger stripes might look dated or cringe-worthy, but hey, that’s kind of the point here. Take cues from Max Mara and bring together two different motifs, or go full-on Tom Ford and sport your spots against a bright canvas.

Remember the 90s and early 2000s, when zigzag headbands and crab clips reigned supreme? Those golden days are back, everyone. It’s high time for nostalgia. Brb, we’ve got to dig up our barrettes and funky hair accessories from grade school.

Bright Eyes

Here’s a confession: we might be over your typical eyeshadow shades. Sure, we still love a timeless brown or a seductive smokey eye, but we’re shifting our gazes a little in the upcoming months. Shows like Area and Sies Marjan showed us that a one-two punch of color on the lids goes a long way in elevating an otherwise pared-down beauty look. Lid colors are even better in pairs, it seems. Try out a brave lime green and aquamarine combo or go major with violet and red.
