How to wear the classic slip and trendy matching sets the funtastical way with Pat and Gelai

We’re shaking up Wonder Plays Dress Up and putting the funtastical back in fashion. After all, the series is about trying on different styles and trends, exploring the many ways you can work them into your wardrobe and, if it works, making it your own.

In this episode, we cast Pat and Gelai, each one with a distinct aesthetic, and put them in pieces girls like you and I already own: the slip dress and matching set. The challenge is to dress them up or pare them down according to the occasion, mood or what have you, and (as repeated later on) maximize cost per wear. TAKE ME TO CAMP

Taking unintentional inspiration from the recent MET Gala and in the spirit of Treat Yo Self, dress up your pieces with something delicate, something kitsch or simply out-there.

Here’s another way to wear a mid-length slip: wear it with a shorter, dressier frock. Put on a blazer in a contrasting color to make it office appropriate.

Meanwhile if your matching set is more on the sporty side (sports bra and shorts) and you want to maximize cost per wear, throw on a playful top or an oversized blazer. Or both if you’re feeling confident.

Black, boring? Never. It’s an opportunity to play with different details, fabrics and textures—in this case sheer, frills and glitter—without looking over the top. It can pare down an intimidating piece or soften up a gritty look. But just in case you still want a punch of color, try on highlighter shades like lime green or bright orange and pink by way of accessories.

When classics meet: a white shirt under a slip or under a slinky matching set makes an entirely different look.
