Gossip Girl’s Reboot Takes Notes From Gen Z’s Fashion Trends

Gossip Girl redefines what it means to be a young elite in 2020

If you’ve been bingeing Gossip Girl reruns on Netlfix during quarantine, you’re not alone. But guess what? The rumors are true! Gossip Girl is launching a reboot on HBO Max with 10 hour-long episodes. The show is set 8 years after the original series, which aired in 2007. The series will feature a new generation of New York’s elite prep-school teens who have to navigate through today’s social media-driven world. With everyone stuck to their gadgets during this pandemic, it’s the perfect time to revive the website we all love to hate.

New York, November 10: Tavi Gevinson, Evan Mock, Emily Aly Lind, Thomas Doherty, Eli Brown, Jordan Alexander, Zion Moreno, and Savannah Lee Smith

Constance Billard and St. Judes’ new batch of elites rock tricked out uniforms much like the original cast, but better. Thanks to paparazzi snaps of behind the scenes outtakes, we get a glimpse of the characters and their sense of style. Overall, the new kids are laidback—in an edgy Gen Z type of way.

The photo of the new cast on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum has everyone excited for a fresh representation of the New York teens. Youth fashion has come a long way since 2007 and Gossip Girl’s reboot is showcasing it full-fledged. We’re no longer going to see matching headbands and colored tights. We’re getting loose fits and buzzcuts.

Evening Wear

Of course, it wouldn’t be Gossip Girl without ballgowns and party dresses. When the characters are outside of school, they switch out of their preppy style in favor of glamorous clothes we wish we personally owned. This time around, the girls are not buried under piles of tacky accessories. They strut in monochrome looks and statement pieces. But one thing we know for sure is that they’re all designer. Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen would be proud to see their successors in Giambattista and Rasario.

Street Style

The new elites of the Upper East Side can go both ways. The original cast wouldn’t be caught dead in sneakers, except for Dan Humphrey. But since Gossip Girl’s disappearance, streetwear has dominated luxury fashion and normcore has become the new cool. In this generation, It Girls don’t strut in heels; they walk in chunky sneakers. Comfort and style have merged over the years and we all love it.

If there’s anything Gen Z likes to do, it’s breaking barriers to make space for the new norm. As the “woke” consumers of fashion, gender-neutral clothing isn’t something we shy away from. The previous show had a very distinct definition of style for the masculine and feminine. This time around, we get gender-neutral fits that look just as good on the guys as it does on the girls.

Out With the Old and in With the New

We’ll still get a taste of the old school elite in scalloped collars and loafers, but there’s a significant shift in the way the new kids carry themselves. The reboot portrays a more realistic approach to what the teens these days are wearing. They’re a little undone and a lot more carefree. It’s the aesthetic of the rebellious rich teen. You won’t see them dressed in head-to-toe Chanel, but they will wear $200 sneakers to school.

The iteration of Gossip Girl will debut on HBO Max in 2021. Production began in March of this year but, much like other shows, the pandemic has caused a delay. Not to worry, 2020 is ending soon. At least we’ve got something to look forward to!
