Styling Refresher: The Subtle, Updated Trick to Wearing That Oversized Button-Down

Try your luck and untuck

Let me open this love letter to my large collection of zany, printed dad shirts with an attempt to debunk the myth that the revered oversized button-down is nothing but morning-after-wear. Life is (regrettably) not a chick flick and you may as well redirect your romantic imagination towards crafting post-quarantine outfits—an equally enthralling endeavor if you’re the type who treats OOTD-planning like a sport cough. I’m totally lecturing myself here.

Hear my piece. The oversized button-down counts as officewear, weekend-wear, quarantine wear, after-swim-wear, I-have-nothing-to-wear-wear…you get the picture. It’s chameleonic in its capability to look simultaneously undone and put-together. And I’m inclined to think it’s an enduring toast to gendered fashion waning in relevance: Remember when Sharon Stone made her red carpet appearance at the 1998 Oscars in her husband’s big white Gap shirt tucked into a lavender satin Vera Wang skirt? Iconic.

On that note, to deviate from Sharon’s chic yet oft-mimicked #lewk, I say don’t tuck it in. I swear on the chaos of my closet that this is the same simple, versatile banker-striped top in all three photos; below, allow me to pose as your example via this trio of easy, languid outfit equations.

1. Chain-belt + pencil skirt

Proclaim a grand entrance wherever you go with the tinkling jingle-jangle of layered chains slung around your waist.

2. Birkenstocks + extra-long flares

Because both floor-pooling pants and the subverted sandal are having A Shared Moment.

3.Maxi dress + sunhat + beach slides

Summer’s infernal heat beckons you to ditch your fave knit cardigan for the cooler, lighter embrace of crisp cotton.

Bottom line is, feel free to emulate elusive pajama-inspired languorousness because it’s never been more relevant. Or, you know, forgiving.
