Studio Ghibli Does Fashion: The Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro Collaboration Is Here

Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro immortalizes the 1988 masterpiece by Hayao Miyazaki



As a new generation falls in love with Studio Ghibli (many thanks, Netflix, for the more than adequate film catalogue), fashion house Loewe is giving long-time fans a reason to rewind to one Studio Ghibli cult classic. 


At Loewe, 2021 kicks off with Hayao Miyazaki’s 1988 masterpiece My Neighbor Totoro and a capsule collection that says, “Hey, a little child-like wonder can do everyone some good.”


For designer Jonathan Anderson, bringing back Mei and Satsuki’s adventures with the magical Totoro in this way pays homage to the essence of being young––at a crucial time, too. “There is a natural longing for heartwarming feelings right now,” shares the designer-creative director in a statement. “When I think of a movie that affords me that kind of solace, speaking just as directly to a child as it does to an adult, that movie is My Neighbor Totoro.”

The result of the collaboration, according to Anderson, is a capsule that “transports the protagonists of the movie.” They’re immortalized onto classic Loewe accessories; the iconic characters and fantasy landscapes “interpreted as prints or allover prints, jacquard intarsia and leather marquetry.”



The same spirit and design elements are then carried into the ready-to-wear selection, where silhouettes are kept relaxed for pieces like t-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, jumpers and culottes.


Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro is soft and mostly vibrant, disrupted only by one other key piece: the leather biker jackets (that come in two styles) that give the collection a bit more edge and making it more dynamic.




The collection is also introduced by a campaign created with fashion photographer Gray Sorrenti, where images speak to the ultimate message of My Neighbor Totoro: to capture the magical experience of discovering and connecting with nature. It’s something that permeates the whole of Loewe x My Neighbor Totoro. To this, Anderson says: “The message is one of dreamy serenity and hands-on creativity––of being at one with nature and with one’s own inner child––which is especially important right now and, I think, always will be.”
