Men's Power Pieces That Aren’t Suits

Men Weigh In on Their Go-To Power Pieces (That Aren’t Suits)

Take it from the gents

Last month, we took to our social circles to study the woman’s idea of power dressing in this day and age. Despite my well-nurtured love of a crisp, coordinated suit, the verdict was clear. There isn’t one, single route to sartorial empowerment and it certainly doesn’t have to lie in the sleeves of a blazer or cuffs of a matching pair of trousers.

This time, we set our sights on the guys. What are their goof-proof power pieces? When do they reach for them?

What is your favorite power piece in your closet?

Uniqlo ankle pants.

Does this piece have an origin story?

[It was] the first pair that fit me perfectly. No alterations needed. Fit at the waist was snug and the length of the pants was just right.

What is your favorite power piece in your closet?

My maroon Dr. Martens 1460 low-cut boots.

Does this piece have an origin story?

I’ve always been a fan of chunky shoes and these have been on my wishlist for quite a while now. Bought them online, but I’d been fitting them at their brick and mortar stores for quite awhile before finally purchasing them about a year ago.

You reach for this piece when…

I wanna look dressy yet laid back.

How do you feel when you put this piece on?

I feel somehow taller and it gives me that extra boost of confidence.

What is your favorite power piece in your closet?

My favorite piece is this pair of maroon pants. I don’t really find it special. It’s actually just plain. My mother thinks that the style of these pants belong to the pants, [and] says it’s something my grandpa would wear. But that’s not really a problem.

Does this piece have an origin story?

I was walking by a row of thrift stores on my way home sometime last year. For some reason, I decided to enter one of the stores. The shop was not particularly inviting, but there was something about it that drew me in. I guess it was the pants calling me. As soon as I spotted them, I knew I’d love wearing them. I bought them even if they were too big.

You reach for this piece when…

I reach out for this piece when I need to feel comfortable. When I was still looking for a publication, I wore this a lot when I needed to go to shoots, interviews, or events. It’s basically my go-to piece when I feel quite anxious. I also grab this when a task requires me to take long walks. Since it’s versatile, I can pair it with just a dress shirt for formal occasions or a tee on a regular day.

How do you feel when you put this piece on?

I feel really pleasant and light. It fits just the way I want it to: light on the waist and airy everywhere else. I don’t know if it’s fit to call it a power piece, but I guess you’ll only truly feel a sense of confidence and power when you’re comfortable with what you’re wearing.

What is your favorite power piece in your closet?

It took a while to figure out, but should the weather be forgiving, it is this lovely lived-in black leather biker jacket from the H&M x Balmain collaboration.

Does this piece have an origin story?

Everyone around me knows I am extremely careful with my finances, so much so that I very rarely splurge on things such as fashion. But I’ve eyed this piece the moment the campaign came out and I had the privilege of interfacing with it before anyone else did. Needless to say, it was love at first wear. So, when it was time to buy it, it was the first time I would cough up that much cash in a single go. Also, I told [the] universe that if my turn came and there wasn’t anything else in my size, then it wasn’t meant to be. I guess it was truly meant to be mine.

You reach for this piece when…

I need to feel super. Or if I’m trying to be extra cut but feigning nonchalance.

How do you feel when you put this piece on?

Bad-ass. It may sound odd, but the moment the heavy-duty jacket grazes my skin, I have this irresistible urge to ride a motorcycle and speed off into the distance.
