Preppy Attire Makes a Comeback

Preppy Attire Makes a Comeback

School uniforms are often despised, but preppy outfits are here to stay

It’s back-to-school season, but students aren’t the only ones in uniform. Preppy attire has taken over formalwear in our adult lives, and we’re here for it. Maybe it’s because we never got over the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite, or we miss the days when subversion gave us a good thrill without getting ourselves into real trouble (other than detention, of course). Turns out, rebellious collegiate core is the perfect gateway to today’s addiction to the antithesis of style. Personalization and reworking clothes have been more popular than ever, and now that we’re adults, we won’t get a detention slip for it.

The Constance Billard Effect

We’re seeing uniforms translate themselves from the classroom to the catwalk and now the streets. Thanks to the Gossip Girl reboot, we’re reminded of how fun it is to customize uniforms with a personal flare. From buzzcuts to androgynous dressing, the new kids in town emulate the essence of Gen Z rebellion.

Although Serena and Blair’s style will always be iconic, at least this time, we won’t see tacky headbands and colored tights (sorry, Blair lovers). The reboot serves classic old money looks with modern statement pieces, giving us fashion inspo for our everyday preppy looks.

The Return of Thom Browne

Thom Browne has been the poster brand for preppy clothing after its triumphant return to the fashion scene. Dressing practically half of the stars at the Met ball this year, Thom Browne has quickly become a celebrity favorite. Originally a menswear brand, Browne has since shifted towards flamboyant academia that caters to both men and women of all ages.

Miu Miu’s Viral Micro Skirts

Miu Miu famously brought back the pleated schoolgirl skirt, but with an ultra-mini remix. Our parents and teachers would never approve of it, but it is a fashion statement. And for us, every day is a fashion show, so might as well show out. As Max Wolfe once said, “It’s fashion week, so accoutre accordingly.”

Neckties? It’s Giving #girlboss

It seems like designers have been favoring women in neckties and men in standard knits. Prada, Thom Browne and Ralph Lauren have been taking the initiative to change the gendered accessory. And dare I say it, women have been wearing it better.

Rosalia isn’t the only singer appreciating the preppy trend. Japanese Breakfast singer Michelle Zauner has been incorporating boarding school attire into her everyday wear for a sharp and edgy feel. In her 7 Days, 7 Looks video with Vogue, she admits that Thom Browne is her go-to designer for days when she has to show up as “author Michelle.”

Since Browne is the king of tailoring, it’s no surprise that he is the first pick for serious occasions.
