Show Your Skin Some Love: Introducing Serum Blush

Skincare and makeup in one pigmented swoop

Whenever I write about trending topics, the filing cabinet in my brain immediately brings out memories of watching Project Runway. Right before the final judging in each episode, Heidi Klum would famously say, ā€œOne day youā€™re in, the next day youā€™re out.ā€ No truer words have been spokenā€”even in the realm of beauty.

No matter how trend-averse you think you are, our lives are governed by trendsā€”because most of them spring directly from our needs. When masks became a staple, we began looking for transfer-proof foundation and lipstick. When Zoom meetings became the prime means for human interaction, we made some necessary changes. Now that weā€™re on our eleventh (yes, eleventh) month of indoor imposition, the tectonic plates of beauty trends have shifted yet again.

Accepting the large possibility of having to stay home for at least a few more months and recognizing maskne as a real threat, beauty is now all about skinimalism. We want to see our real skin. Feel it, appreciate it, nourish it. On the other hand, we wantā€”or need?ā€”something that will make us look like we arenā€™t being weighed down by the collective dread that weā€™re carrying.

One beauty product falls right in that intersection. Makeup, meet skincare. World, meet serum blush.

The most popular iteration on the market is easily Em Cosmeticsā€™ Color Drops Serum Blush, but several local brands have stepped up with their own versions of nourishing cheek tints. Discover the ones weā€™ve got our eyes on up ahead!

Hello Bloom Beautyā€™s Future Blush Serum Drop (P195) lives in the in-betweens of makeup and skincare. It delivers a one-two punch of nourishment and colorā€”in three shades to be exact: deep red Good Mood, dark rosy mauve Glow Tho and super-warm coral Sun Baked. A deep dive into the ingredient list reveals a bunch of skincare goodies we love: aloe vera, niacinamide and allantoin, which moisturize, firm and soothe. Lightweight and pigmented, formulated to leave a healthy-looking flush in its wake.

Clocheflameā€™s AAF! (P389) isnā€™t marketed as a serum blush, but this pigmented multi-tasker deserves a spot on our list.

Vitamin E! Collagen! Mango butter! This formula keeps it simple, focusing on ingredients that ensure every pat, swipe and smear of color comes with intense hydration and nourishment. It also has SPFā€”and we canā€™t help that anything with good olā€™ sun protection gets us a little excited.Ā

Glass Drops Serum Blush by Whimsy

With compact packaging and a convenient doe-foot applicator at an extremely friendly price point, we can immediately see why the Glass Drops Serum Blush (P169) requires frequent restocks. It can be applied on the cheeks and the lips and comes in three soft shades. This is the kind of failsafe we would pick up and tuck into our pockets without second thought.

However, we need to talk about the ingredients. Whimsyā€™s take on serum blush might not be as nourishing as the rest on this list. The main ingredients list Paraffinum Liquidum and Caprylic/?Capric Triglyceride as the main components of the formula, but the former doesnā€™t do all that much to actually nourish the skin. Instead, it sits pretty on the surface and prevents water loss, but thatā€™s still a good thing! Partnered with the second ingredient on the list, the Glass Drops Serum Blush still leaves the skin soft, smooth and natural-looking.

Keep an eye on Whimsyā€™s Shopee page for a restock!
