From #Balletcore to Chunky Stompers: Meet 2023’s Upcoming “It” Shoes

Peep the shoe trends we’re stepping into 2023 with

It’s the start of 2023 and you know what that means: it’s still trend prediction time. While we’ve laid out what we’re replacing our beloved 2022 clothing trends with, we’re focusing on the dominating  shoe trends this time. But as opposed to our predictions from last year, it seems like some 2023 It Shoes hero aesthetics over practicality. That aside, we’ll witness the renaissance of a couple of silhouettes we thought would remain in the past. Alas, it never will be, as trends still and will continuously operate in a cycle.

Ahead, we bring you 2023’s “It” shoes.

From the studio to the bar(re): #Balletcore flats

Blame it on the #balletcore users of TikTok, but high fashion is also picking up on the delicate aesthetic that comes with it. As wrap skirts and tights come back into the mainstream, so do the classic ballet flats. This shoe trend appeared in multiple looks on the Spring 2023 runways of JW Anderson, Simone Rocha and Tod’s. Whether it’s a statement shoe with an eye-catching print, a pointed-toe moment or the Miu Miu satin ballerinas, this style is having its moment.

Chunky and clunky stompers

Maybe it’s the cross between the rise of Moto fashion, the grunge resurgence or remnants of the Y2K influence, but 2023 has us welcoming this shoe trend: chunkier footwear. Think the thick-soled and sometimes buckle-embellished boots found at Paco Rabanne’s Spring 2023 presentation. But for the gals who love a subtle chunky moment, Miu Miu focused on a sleek and bright-hued body over a plain black wedge heel. So, yes, wedges are officially back in, whether they’re sculptural iterations by Bottega Venetta or the classic wide heels.

Walk a mile in Mary Janes

Whether it’s a throwback to secondary school uniforms or the constant allure of the #coquette girls wearing the shoe with lace socks, it seems like the Mary Jane is here to stay. The 2023 shoe trend appears in the other iteration of the viral Miu Miu ballerina straps and the reinvented iterations seen on the runways. Chanel reimagines the shoe with a ribbon strap, pointed toe and block heel. Meanwhile, Prada explores a more fantasy, gnome-like finish with the pointed toe going upward. Explore this classic silhouette in vibrant colors, embroidered prints and even unconventional socks to spice up the look.

Update your Mary Jane game:

Shining, shimmering and gleaming splendid

I think it was dear Taylor Swift who sang, “Best believe I'm still bejeweled / When I walk in the room / I can still make the whole place shimmer.” Well, this song might just dictate the embellished, metallic, shining and shimmering shoe trend of 2023. In an age that embraces bright maximalism, there’s no harm in extending the exuberance down to footwear. Think: crystals on flats ala Chanel and JW Anderson, and silver boots and loafers on Paco Rabanne. We’re stepping into the year in glittery styles.

Shine in these glittery shoes:

Steve Madden Attune Sandal (P4,760) Zara Sling-back Rhinestone High-Heel Shoes (P2,295) Zara High-Heel MeaThcrylate Mules (P1,995)

Sky-High Thigh Boots

Are these impractical? Maybe. But do they look good? Damn straight. The runways showcased thigh-high boots, where Rick Owens explored some draped, loose leather for his presentation. Meanwhile, Tom Ford focused on fit and a gleaming finish. Manila heat be damned, we’re shimmying into these silhouettes to tease some skin this year.

Strut into 2023 with these boots:
