I Tried SNAILWHITE’s 21-Day Challenge so You Don’t Have To

With oily, acne-prone skin, the new snailwhite had its work cut out for itself

There are certain habits that make it difficult, I’ll admit, to dodge self-consciousness especially when it comes to my skin. If you’re anything like me (who watches beauty vlogs on the regular, scrolls through Instagram daily, and creates beauty content for work), I’d say it’s inevitable. And in this case, being self-conscious is something that may shift to being insecure along the way. Thats when I hear about snailwhite.

The struggle with oily skin, enlarged pores, and adult acne definitely doesn’t make things easier. My skin story in a nutshell: it has its good days and it has its bad days. Rather than a single bad skin phase, other people are blessed enough to outgrow, I learned to live with the prolonged version.

Still, I want this year to be my skin’s breakthrough year. At the start of 2019, I made myself a promise that this would be the year that I committed to getting my skin in tip-top shape. Thus, my decision was to hop on the SNAILWHITE bandwagon and attempt the skincare brand’s 21-day #SNAILWHITEchallenge. A Snail Secretion Filtrate Moisture Facial Cream, Thailand’s #1 moisturizer, for 21 days straight? Apparently, I was less than a month away from youthful, glowing skin. Curious to know how my skin, in particular, would react, I dove right in.

Here’s what the SNAILWHITE challenge called for: the simple tracking of my skin’s progress every seven days till I reach day 21. As someone who knows that the triggers of skin issues aren’t solely what you apply on your face but what you eat, drink and do throughout the day, I thought to include things like cups of coffee, meals and water intake in my tracking. It would be a rookie mistake to assume that applying product is all it takes to get amazing skin.

Here goes: 21 days in the life of a SNAILWHITE beauty girl using the brand’s famed Snail Secretion Filtrate Moisture Facial Cream.

Days 0 to 7

February 21 to 28

What I ate:

The usual lutong pambahay with a balanced mix of greens, rice and ulam––save for that one day I attended a kiddie party where they served tons of fast food, Cebu lechon and ube cheesecake. I also enjoyed a glorious bowl of ramen on my anniversary with my boyfriend.

How much water I drank:

A liter a day.

How much coffee I had:

I had two cups of coffee a day (enjoyed with either soy or almond milk) except for that one day I attended an “Introduction to Brewing” class. Granted we were only sipping coffee, those were all still pretty strong and they did give me a nice coffee buzz. I also felt a little dehydrated that day.

How my workouts went:

I went to the gym thrice this week. This included taking a dance class. It had been four years since my last dance class, so this experience made me happy. I’d like to think my skin was happy on that day, too.

Skin concerns:

Redness, drying pimples and a few dark spots on my forehead.

Overall thoughts:

I wasn’t expecting to see jawdropping results considering it had only been a week. I was also already dealing with a few newly-dried pimples and dark spots. Knowing my skin, these things really do take a lot of time to heal. What I did enjoy about the SNAILWHITE moisturizer was that it delivered on its promise somehow: the instant suppleness post-application was one noticeable thing.

Days 8 to 13
March 1 to 7

What I ate:

Healthier food compared to the usual! This week, I took advantage of Baguio’s fresh produce and vegetables.

How much water I drank:

I wasn’t as faithful to my usual water intake this time around. Travel also made it more challenging to track. (Sorry, mom.)

How much coffee I had:

Just three cups for the whole week (who am I?) I did, however, drink a lot of green tea, ginger juice, and lemon tea to help with a bit of throat discomfort.

How my workouts went:

Err, I had no gym time this time. But walking around Baguio counts as exercise, right?

Skin concerns:

Redness, sun exposure, and the same drying pimples and a few dark spots on my forehead from last week.

Moments worth noting:

Part of my Baguio trip with the boyfriend involved catching the Panagbenga festival. This happened from 8AM to 12 noon. We watched a good two hours of the parade so, you guessed it, my skin was under direct sunlight during this period. SNAILWHITE’s CC cream with SPF 50 to the rescue.

I also got my hair dyed a nice golden beige, something I hadn’t done in three or four years, so my scalp and skin were shookt. I had several pimples pop up around my hairline. Boo.

Overall thoughts:

Since my skin was extra dehydrated this week, it was overproducing oil to combat this along with the drastic changes in temperature (Baguio was at 13 degrees at one point).

The effects of SNAILWHITE at this time weren’t life-changing. The dark spots were slightly less visible but I suppose this was too much to ask for a mere moisturizer to proactively remedy.

Days 14 to 21

March 8 to 14

What I ate:

I wanted desperately for my skin to bounce back after our Baguio trip, so I subscribed to one of those meal delivery services on Instagram. Five out of the seven days of the week, I had a salad for breakfast. Not going to lie: I enjoyed it a great deal and the salads were pretty good.

How much water I drank:

I committed to going over a liter a day and succeeded!

How much coffee I had:

One cup a day. I truly feel like a changed person.

How my workouts went:

I made it a point to work out thrice this week. I was pretty much wheezing through my cardio but that was manageable.

Skin concerns:

Redness. Yes, still redness. Then there was a new pimple that I had to pop because I had an event to attend. The dark spots I had since day zero were still there, but they were beginning to look more like freckles than scars.

Moments worth noting:

Well, this was a pretty stressful week. Maybe that inspired this pimple to make a cameo.

Again, since I had to attend an event, I willed said pimple into running its supposed natural course by popping it. I made sure to go easy on the makeup following this, though, and didn’t bother with concealer. At the event, which was for a new camera model where guests were free to test its three new camera modes (night mode, bright mode, and selfie mode), I had a lightbulb moment. Using the selfie mode, I was surprised to see just how glowy my skin looked! And it wasn’t the usual “oily skin glow,” but a healthy glow. Loved it.

Overall thoughts:

The glow is real! I chalk this up to both my healthy diet and water intake and the SNAILWHITE Snail Secretion Filtrate Moisture Facial Cream.

That said, I began to think that SNAILWHITE was better at helping me achieve glowing skin rather than helping me brighten my overall complexion. My skin is pretty hardcore and stubborn, so I’m not surprised that I need to work extra hard to score a brighter complexion. Based on observation, too, I realized that a 21-day timeframe is still too short a time. Perhaps the truly noteworthy results come after months of use.

Day 21 onwards

What I ate:

The same balanced meal with a few cravings for salty food. I also went back to drinking juices.

How much water I drank:

A liter a day.

How much coffee I had:

Two cups a day (I’m back bitches).

How my workouts went:

Got to hit the gym three times this week. I went to a pound class for the first time and that killed me.

Skin concerns:

Redness and pimple marks.

Moments worth noting:

Aunt flow visited. And as inconvenient a time it was to get my period, there it was. The ladies know how this kind of week goes.

Overall thoughts:

I surprisingly didn’t get any new pimples during this week. Typically, when I get my period, I have two or maybe three new pimples that show up, but my skin was cooperative this time around. Granted, my body ached and I craved for salty food, but still! How was my skin so well-behaved? I also accepted the fact that the redness on my cheeks would forever be there, so I didn’t bother trying to fix that anymore. Acne scars were still noticeable, but lessened. Dark spots also lightened.

For a person with my skin type and skin concerns, SNAILWHITE has a fair chance of working its wonders. It lightened my dark spots and gave me a healthy glow, which was one of the brand’s main promises.

In my case, the all-in-one moisturizer probably needed more time for any real brightening to happen. On the brightening front, the 21-day challenge didn’t work as I thought it would. On the flipside, on the glow skin front, SNAILWHITE succeeded. You pick your battles and take your wins, I guess.
