A Footwear Brand Joins The Sustainable Fashion Movement

Honestly, we’re not complaining. Every small step in this direction is better than nothing

Every now and then, we do a feature on sustainable fashion and the reactions we receive vary from YES to “are you serious? GTFO.” We get it, naysayers feel it’s no more than a marketing strategy; a ploy to make one’s brand seem relevant while increasing profit. But if a brand is actually making the effort to create products that are a little friendlier to the earth at their own expense and want to make a sale at the same time, why is that bad? It’s become so easy to point fingers, that we fail to realize that we, as consumers, also have to take responsibility for our consumptions (also law of supply and demand ?) be it in the clothes we wear or the food we eat.

So listen up, footwear brand Sperry is joining the sustainable movement and we’re here for it. Inspired by their love for the sea, Sperry just recently introduced a limited edition eco collection featuring shoes made with BIONIC® material (or the BIONIC® collection) and spun from plastic recovered from marine and coastal environments. Think: the brand’s beloved iconic styles but eco-friendlier. Even the shoes boxes are made from 100% recycled paper material and uses only vegetable ink and water-based glue.

Take the Crest Twin Gore sneaker; its latest iteration is woven from an average of five recycled plastic bottles. The Authentic Original boat shoe on the other hand is made from 100% hand-sewn hemp upper and laces, and outsoles from recycled rubber.

Sperry has also partnered with global and local ocean advocates to strengthen their cause aptly called Look Good. Do Good. The brand aims to educate people on ways we can all help protect the environment by opting out of single-use plastic. Through their partnership with Waterkeeper Alliance, the largest and fastest growing nonprofit focused on clean water and BIONIC®, a mission-driven material engineering company, Sperry hopes to help protect and preserve the ocean from plastic pollution. Meanwhile, locally, Sperry is working with Save Philippine Seas, a non-profit organization founded in 2011 created to educate and organize community-based projects to protect marine and coastal assets of the country and SIP Ph, a Filipino enterprise that champions waste management solutions and produces reusable cutlery and straws.
