How To Wear Summer Trends Using What You Already Have

How To Wear Summer Trends Using What You Already Have

Shopping not (always) required

My wardrobe is comprised of mostly black and white pieces with the occasional (and necessary) denim, metallics and colorful, printed items. But as a follower and consumer of fashion, I am aware of the trends, from Resort to FW-whenever. But does that mean you’ve to update your wardrobe with what’s hot every few months? My early 20s self would have easily said yes. Now considering age, having a family and making sustainable choices, not really. I still love me some retail therapy don’t get me wrong, but these days I’ve consumed less and learned to be a little more creative instead.

So here, how to rock the freshest summer trends using what you already have, borrowing from lola or mom and shopping—if absolutely necessary.

SS18 Trends

Color — pastel, bold or crisp white

Chances are you already have pastels (read: Pantone announces rose quartz and serenity blue as 2016’s colors of the year), bold colors and white pieces in your wardrobe. The trick to wearing summer’s “new” colors? Pairing complementary colors together or, for the color averse, wearing it with neutral, summer-friendly shades, like brown, white and even black. Meanwhile, an all-white look might be harder to pull off for many as white does stain quite easily. But it’s easier—not to mention flattering to wear—than you think. See: little white dress, jumpsuits, summer blazers with high-waisted trousers and just a bra underneath, etc. Options below:

Logo-mania — logos on shirts, bags, everywhere!

Blame it on Gucci, but logo-emblazoned merch is back and bigger than ever. But who says you can only wear designer? Don’t be shy, wear your favorite brands, spoofs, quotes, characters, etc. loud and proud.

Pattern — flannel, gingham, pin checks, plaid, tartan

Who doesn’t have any one of these patterns in their closet? You, your mom, dad, or siblings likely have one or two—or a co-ord set if you’re lucky—lying around in their closet. The trick to making the look now instead of dated? Wear it oversized, with similar prints in different colors or throwing something shiny over it. But come to think of it, regardless of how you wear it, this pattern has and will never go out of style. Just ask Cher Horowitz (she’s worn at least three times in the movie).

Bags — Fanny pack

Fanny pack, bum bag or belt bag—this bag had long been hidden in mom or dad’s closet for being a fashion joke. But thanks to brands like Gucci and Balenciaga, the fanny has been reimagined into several high fashion iterations that are as street chic as they are utilitarian. But again, it’s not what you wear (though that Gucci belt bag is really nice) but how you wear it, whether on your waist or across the body, right?

Accessories — Straw everything

We’ve seen straw accessories on the runways for a while now and found that they make great companions for beach trips (duh), weekend getaways out of town or casual strolls around the city. The best part? It’s straw bags and hats galore in the PH! You’ll likely find one at home, in the palengke, souvenir shops in department stores and malls, curated lifestyle stores, local trade shows—literally everywhere. No need to look further than our shores. Our finds below:
