The Truth About Cellulite And How To Keep Them At Bay

Because many of us women have it

Got cellulite? Us, too. Truth is, 90% of women are prone to getting cottage cheesy thighs regardless of age or if they are fit, slim or on the heavy side. And because us girls have the same problem, we asked around and sought expert advice to tell you the truth about cellulite and how to keep them at bay.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is not made up of our body’s toxins. It occurs when underlying fat deposits push through layers of collagen fibers or connective tissue under the skin. More often, this happens in the buttocks and thigh areas, but also on arms, stomach and other parts of the body. The condition can be aggravated by hormones, lack of exercise, excess fat and poor circulation.
Here’s a visual of how it happens:

Cellulite actually gets worse with age. The older we get, the less estrogen—the hormone that keeps our blood vessels flowing smoothtly—we produce. Low estrogen means poor circulation, decrease in collagen production and breakdown of older connective tissues. Genes also have something to do with your dimpled parts; if the women in your family have it, then you’re likely to have them, too.

So what can you do?

Good ol’ fashioned exercise. Regular exercise won’t cure cellulite but it can prevent and/or reduce its appearance. Stretching and strengthening problem areas also help firm up muscles and tighten skin thus making cellulite less noticeable. Win-win situation, ladies!

You can also try eating healthily or a well-balanced, plant-heavy diet. Try incorporating more cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes and bell peppers into your daily meals and staying hydrated to reduce inflammation throughout the body.

What about those cellulite-zapping creams?

Sadly, they CAN’T cure cellulite, at least not permanently. For a quick fix, look for skin-saving creams with retinoid or retinol; temporary effects include creating a thicker skin that help camouflage those bumps. The good news? These products are likely to help with slimming and body contouring per skin doctors.

Are there other ways?

Thanks to modern science, YES. Enter the world of injectable dermal fillers; used to plump up and even out skin. Though the effects are temporary, so you’ll have to keep getting these injectible treatments every few months. You can also try non-invasive procedures, like laser, radio-frequency and massage techniques. But do keep in mind that these aren’t permanent
either and require monthly to bi-annual maintenance.

You might also want to kick this habit.

Smoking reduces blood vessel flow and negatively affects collagen formation thus, damaging connective tissues that help keep underlying fat at bay. It also causes wrinkles, aging, skin dryness and discoloration, stretch marks and lung diseases among others.

There is hope.

With advancements in science and technology, cellulite could have a permanent solution one day. More and more treatments offer longer term solutions that last up to two years. And if you have the time and money to do so, great! If not, there’s always the natural route (recommended!).
