Earth-Friendly Update: Tretorn’s New Sneakers Recycle Fishing Nets and Consumer Plastics

Earth-Friendly Update: Tretorn’s New Sneakers Recycle Fishing Nets and Consumer Plastics

The Swedish footwear brand walks its talk with two new innovative releases

Disturbing new learning: an estimated 650,000 tons of fishing nets are adrift in the ocean right now. With winds and currents shifting these “ghost nets” around, they’ve become a form of waste considered among the greatest killers of wildlife in our waters.

Looking into this environmental issue, a footwear brand like Tretorn might seem like an unlikely advocate. But it’s a perfect fit.

Since launching its Eco Essentials Sneaker Initiative in 2019, the Swedish footwear brand has steadily incorporated recycled materials into its lineup. A big part of the vision is also to scrap the need to look to virgin materials for shoes. This is where those destructive fishing nets come in. With it, the new wave for Tretorn.

Meet the Nylite Ocean Net and the Tournament Low Ocean Net Sneaker

The latest Tretorn Eco Essentials release reintroduces two classic designs. The Nylite Ocean Net and Tournament Low Ocean Net sneakers are earth-friendly updates. These models are made of regenerated nylon from fishing nets and plastic waste from the oceans.

The Nylite Ocean Net sneaker comes in three colorways (Chalk & Stone, Chalk & Gold, Black), while the Tournament Low Ocean Net sneaker is available in two (Chalk & Stone, Black).

From material down to process, sustainability is in mind through and through. Tretorn has shifted to a mindset where nothing should go to waste. “Aside from sustainable materials, these pairs are also made under a water and energy reduction program,” Tretorn further explained in its official statement. “[This] saves 32 liters of water and 284 lighting hours per shoe.”

The Bigger Picture for Tretorn:

To further its advocacy, Tretorn has also collaborated with the charity SEA LIFE Trust on the Eco Essentials Sneakers. The brand will donate 10% of each pair sold to the charity best known for its work protecting the world’s oceans and marine life.
