Yeezy Gap Engineered by Balenciaga Is Coming

Kanye West (who now goes by “Ye”), Balenciaga creative director Demna Gvasalia (who now just goes by “Demna”) and GAP are taking co-branding to new heights.

2021’s run of collaborations-slash-crossovers like Fendi x Versace and Gucci x Balenciaga was so warmly received, 2022 might just be the year brands kick it into overdrive. Case in point: rapper and designer Ye has taken to Instagram to preview something huge in the works. Ye, Balenciaga’s Demna and Gap, Inc. are partnering up on a collection, injecting an element of luxury to the ongoing Yeezy Gap collaboration between Ye and the retail giant.

The first collection is expected to drop in June.

Bottega Veneta Announces Its Chinese New Year 2022 Campaign by Taking Over the Great Wall of China

The brand is making big moves in the Year of the Tiger.

The Italian luxury label sends its greetings via a digital installation that takes up a portion of the Great Wall of China. The signature Bottega Veneta green is paired with a splash of tangerine that spells out “Happy New Year” in Mandarin. This not only ushers in the brand’s Lunar New Year celebration, but its pledge to a donation in support of the renovation and maintenance of the wall’s “Shanhai Pass,” also known as “First Pass under Heaven.”

The installation is also one of the brand’s first endeavors under the tutelage of its new creative director, Matthieu Blazy (following the controversial and sudden departure of Daniel Lee in November). The next is the Chinese New Year 2022 campaign itself photographed by Charlotte Wales and starring He Cong and Wang Chenming.

Cher Is the New Ugg Ambassador

And it’s already doing the numbers: the new campaign starring the icon has triggered a 1,280% spike in demand for the shoe company.

She’s Cher, bitch—and the new face (and feet) of California footwear company UGG. Kicking off the brand’s “Feel ___,” campaign, Cher stars in a video and photoshoot set in her Malibu home, where she lounges in the UGG Classic Boot and Coquette Slipper. In the official campaign video, she also shares some pearls of wisdom: “I’ve spent a lifetime of people either hating me or loving me,” she says. “And I mean, you want to be loved, but finally it’s like ‘fuck it.’” The campaign is set to continue throughout the year featuring, as per the brand, more “icons, leaders of culture and champions of change who inspire generations, promote individuality and evoke emotion.”

For now, Cher alone has caused a 1,280% spike in demand for the shoes featured in her shoot.

Fashion News: Fine Art Meets High Fashion in the Sansó x Septième Rebelle Collaboration

Manila-based couture label Septième Rebelle teams up with Fundacion Sansó for a collection inspired by the distinguished Spanish-born painter Juvenal Sansó.

Quick history lesson: In the 1960s, celebrated master painter Sansó once dabbled in fashion as a textile designer while studying at the École Nationale des Beaux Artes in Paris. Jumping into 2021 and 2022, this part of legacy is revisited by Filipino couture label Septième Rebelle.

For its founder, Robbie Santos, getting to fuse Sansó’s work into fashion was a meeting of two design journeys. “He was still new as an artist [when he worked as a young textile designer]. I feel a certain level of parallelism with Sansó in [the] way that I’m also starting my life as a fashion designer—sixty years later,” shares Santos. “I think there is a connection between what he made and what I am making for the collaboration.”

The collection highlights the meticulous process of digitally printing Sansó’s hand-painted original designs on fabric, as well as drawing inspiration from Sansó’s paintings in order to find fabric that embodied the painter’s aesthetic.

Loewe Releases a Spirited Away Capsule With Studio Ghibli

Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson introduces another dreamy collaboration.

Around this time last year, Studio Ghibli fans got a treat when luxury label Loewe launched its My Neighbor Totoro capsule. He does it again this year, taking on another classic: the 2001 film directed by the legendary Hayao Miyazaki. Pieces here feature the beloved characters of the movie, including Chihiro, Haku, Yubaba, and the no-face spirit Kaonashi.

Beyond obvious motifs, however, the capsule explores and honors some Japanese traditions, like the traditional stitching method boro, quite beautifully. “The collection looks at different types of craft, and we’ve applied it to everything from the blankets to the way in which the embroideries have been done—it’s about having fun with the narratives of the film,” says Anderson. “My favorite pieces are the Hammock bag with Chihiro’s face in 360-degree embroidery all over, and the hand-knitted crewneck sweater with the Yu-bird and Bô intarsia motif—it’s a mix of lurex embroidery with 3D crochet technique on the wool ball, which emphasizes the craft—a big signature of Loewe.”
