“Some hats can only be worn if you’re willing to be jaunty, to set them at an angle and to walk beneath them with a spring in your stride as if you’re only a step away from dancing.”

Drama! Fantasy! Fun! Siobhan Moylan turns heads in fashion’s rather underutilized accessory

When the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde had Sinulid, its annual graduation show, in July, one immediate observation was that the newest crop of fashion designers came with their A-game. By and large, from Alina Macalindong to Therese Melliza, each collection was well-rounded. Runway looks were styled from head to toe, exhibiting thoughtful consideration for every piece and part that, together, brought a fully realized concept to life. Headwear was the one standout common denominator: the cherry on top that only took the garments next level. Yet, we had a hunch that these headpieces could make a pretty strong statement on their own.

Whether sculptural––verging on wearable art––or purely decorative, we tuck function into our back pockets for a moment to explore the many ways headwear alone can give us just the dose of drama, fantasy and fun to kick off Fashion Month with.

Captured by fashion photographer Lei Magluyan, “Good Headwear” starring Siobhan Moyan pares down the wardrobe for the shoot with back-to-basics GUESS denim, leaving it to things like unconventional layering to make a statement. Beauty looks here include playful pigtails and vavavoom curls created by hairstylist Mycke Arcano and experimental yet wearable frosted lips and orange-tinted brows by makeup artist Ida Siasoco.

“There is no attitude required.

The hat brings the attitude.

And when people try on a hat they like,

it is a bit of fun. It makes them laugh.

You don’t laugh when you put on a pair of shoes,

but you do with a hat.”

––Philip Treacy

Skip the typical routes for monochromatic makeup and save those pinks and reds for another day. Try all coral everything for a different kind of sun-kissed flushed. Even orange-tinted brows can be worn on a regular day out. Casual.
