Before and Afters That Prove Scruff Is the Man’s Version of Contouring

#BetterWithBeards on #NoShaveNovember

Makeup-loving guys and gals know this full well: when done right (read: nothing heavy-handed), contouring has the power to change a person’s face completely. The strategic and artful drawing, shading, baking and blending have the ability to enhance facial features, create flattering dimension and drastically slim down the face. For men, apparently, scruff, stubble and the big bad beard do the same.

It’s more than the je ne sais quoi that men with a little scruff have about them. Attractiveness associated with generous, well-landscaped facial hair isn’t a chance finding at all and the why behind this is tied to some very primal instincts. The Official Journal of the Human Behavior and Evolution Society confirms that there is a proven link between the amount of facial hair a man has and his physical attractiveness. “Beardedness affects judgments of male socio-sexual attributes. [It suggests] that an intermediate level of beardedness is most attractive while full-bearded men may be perceived as better fathers who could protect and invest in offspring.” It all boils down to the search for the perfect mate, yet again.

So as women concern themselves with contouring, blending and highlighting, men have these steps to obtain the perfect stubble to think about: grow, wash, shape, brush, maintain. The payoff appears to be well worth it.
