Meet the Live Performers, DJs and Visual Artists Bringing That Malasimbo Magic to Life

A rundown of the musicians, DJs and artists to see at Malasimbo 2020 this weekend

Malasimbo’s 2020 run—which kicks off tomorrow, in case you missed the memo—marks a number of firsts for the annual music festival. For starters, there’s the Music Business Conference, a symposium for all things related to creation, production, management and marketing in the music landscape featuring the likes of Rolling Stones tour manager Sam Cutler, ((( O ))) and FKJ’s manager Kate Cudberston and Mike Love, among other music industry experts.

Another first: a literal change of scene. For the first time ever, Malasimbo will be celebrated within the bounds of Metro Manila. On February 29 to March 1, La Mesa Eco Park in Quezon City will set the scene for Malasimbo’s tenth anniversary.

With Malasimbo literally closer than ever, excitement is at an all-time high. Ahead of the festival, we look over the lineup of artists—musical and visual, that is—who will be in the spotlight this weekend.

This year’s live performers bring together the best of international acts and the country’s distinct local flavor. Bringing life to the La Mesa Eco Park amphitheatre’s ideal outdoor acoustics, the two-day roster of performers includes Snarky Puppy’s Cory Henry and the Funk Apostles, as well as singer-songwriter Mike Love. Also joining them are Melbourne hit-maker Laneous, Canadian keyboardist Anomalie, Colombian jazz pianist Jesus Molina Quartet, Uncomfortable Science, and Intergalactix. Representing local talent, on the other hand, are Brigada, Yosha, Kadangyan, Marga Jayy, Project Yazz, Talata ni Tala, Malana and Tago Jazz Collective.

Keep Spinning: DJ’s Take Center Stage

There’s more where those acts came from. Beyond bands and live music, Malasimbo 2020 is serving up a grand total of 22 DJ acts. Headliners of the DJ segment are The Reflex and David de Barce, who will also be joined by the likes of Squid 9, Kristian Hernandez, Abdel Aziz,  Edge Pamute, Marvelous, Norris King, Gian Romano, Salamangka, Vapors, Luh Masheen, Mafia, Up Dharma Down’s Ean Mayor, She’s Only Sixteen’s Roberto Seña spinning as St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Deej Fabian spinning as Someguy, Bass Relief, Norris King, Put3ska’s Bing Austria, Rei Ka, DJ duo Bignay Sound System and Jigga Who.

Apart from music, Malasimbo also pushes art to the fore with stimulating visuals and experiential installations. This year, Malasimbo’s featured artists include Hohana, Kawayan de Guia, Govinda Jean, Cherry Ann Fulo and festival founder Olivia d'Aboville, who showcases her work annually.
