From Barbenheimer to the War in Israel and Gaza, here’s our 2023 Year In Search
There’s no denying that this year has been tough. We’ve witnessed and experienced a lot—from the cinematic cultural phenomenon, Barbenheimer, to the inhumane War in Israel and Gaza. And now that we’re down to the last month of the year, many of us are feeling burnt out and even helpless. But if there’s anything 2023 has taught us, it’s the importance of looking back, learning from the past and moving forward with hope.
Google recently released Year In Search 2023—a yearly round-up of the “questions we shared, the people who inspired us, and the moments that captured the world’s attention.” So if you’re wondering what the world searched for this year—from movies, TV series, to news and various personalities—look no further!

The War in Israel and Gaza showed us how we, as humans, are capable of so much destruction. But 2023 also showed us that humanity is not helpless or hopeless as there is so much power and strength that comes from sticking together, speaking up and helping each other out. Even a little can go a long way, so Google how you can help out and free Palestine as a first step!
This year, the world also experienced the loss of many personalities, who will all be greatly missed, including actors from well-loved TV shows like Matthew Perry from Friends, Angus Cloud from Euphoria and just recently, Andre Braugher from Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

Remember when people would go into the cinemas dressed in their best pink and black fits? This 2023, we watched the cinematic cultural phenomenon, Barbenheimer, happen right before our very eyes, wherein two films—Warner Bros. Pictures’ Barbie and Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer—that could not have been any more different, premiered at the same time. The result? Audiences flocked into the movie theatres to watch not just one but both films!

The world also loved The Last of Us, a post-apocalyptic TV series based on a video game featuring fungi that cause brain infection, zombies, and well, trying to survive it all. Sounds familiar? Well, let’s hope and pray that we won’t have to go through another pandemic IRL again.

In the music landscape, we have our very own juan karlos with ERE and Sunkissed Lola with Pasilyo who ruled the airwaves! And of course, no one can deny that our love for K-pop remains as strong as ever, and FIFTY FIFTY’s Cupid and Jung Kook’s SEVEN making it to the world’s top searches is proof of that!

Last but not least, let’s talk about some personalities. This year marked the rise in popularity of Jenna Ortega, who played Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s Wednesday, as well as the romance of Taylor Swift and American footballer Travis Kelce. Rumor has it that Travis just recently asked Taylor’s dad for his blessing to wed her, so let’s see what these two lovebirds will be up to next!
2023 may have been difficult, but it also showed us that life is still very much worth living. Our Year In Search is proof that there are still so many causes worth fighting for and that there are so many more moments to look forward to. So here’s to welcoming 2024 with hope and an open heart!
