How to wear the classic slip and trendy matching sets the funtastical way with Pat and Gelai
Warning: the video contains larger than life bows and patterns, fun frills and octopus limbs. It’s a circus in here
We’re shaking up Wonder Plays Dress Up and putting the funtastical back in fashion. After all, the series is about trying on different styles and trends, exploring the many ways you can work them into your wardrobe and, if it works, making it your own.
In this episode, we cast Pat and Gelai, each one with a distinct aesthetic, and put them in pieces girls like you and I already own: the slip dress and matching set. The challenge is to dress them up or pare them down according to the occasion, mood or what have you, and (as repeated later on) maximize cost per wear. You wouldn’t want to buy something you’ll only wear once, right? So watch the video and scroll further down for style tips and where to shop ‘em.

THE SLIP AND MATCHING SET
Who doesn’t own a slip or a matching set these days? Don’t have one? Choose one or a set in a cut and color that suits your personality because we promise, the styling possibilities are endless.

TAKE ME TO CAMP
Taking unintentional inspiration from the recent MET Gala and in the spirit of Treat Yo Self, dress up your pieces with something delicate, something kitsch or simply out-there.
On Gelai Orange slip dress (worn as top), ZARA, patchwork Bell Bottoms, HA.MU and white heeled mule, CHARLES & KEITH. On Pat Black ribbed turtleneck top and skort with buttons, STRADIVARIUS, pink denim jacket, BERSHKA, heart embellished and fur-trimmed denim overcoat, SALAD DAY, orange socks, BENCH, pink slingback heeled sandals, CHARLES & KEITH |
KITSCHY KITSCHY YA YA
Here’s another way to wear a mid-length slip: wear it with a shorter, dressier frock. Put on a blazer in a contrasting color to make it office appropriate. Meanwhile if your matching set is more on the sporty side (sports bra and shorts) and you want to maximize cost per wear, throw on a playful top or an oversized blazer. Or both if you’re feeling confident.
On Gelai Orange blazer, BERSHKA, fuchsia and lavender tiered dress, EM-J USON, black slip dress, ZARA. On Pat Pink blazer dress, STRADIVARIUS, pink textured sleeveless top with octopus limbs, SALAD DAY, lime green socks, BENCH, Black “NASA” SK8-Hi 46 MTE DX, VANS |
PAINT IT BLACK Black, boring? Never. It’s an opportunity to play with different details, fabrics and textures—in this case sheer, frills and glitter—without looking over the top. It can pare down an intimidating piece or soften up a gritty look. But just in case you still want a punch of color, try on highlighter shades like lime green or bright orange and pink by way of accessories.
On Gelai, Black cropped utilitarian vest, BERSHKA, sheer top with ruffle details, HA.MU, black slip dress, ZARA, lime green socks, BENCH. On Pat Black ribbed cardigan and midi skirt matching set, glittered sheer turtleneck top and lime green waist bag COTTON ON, sneakers and glittered socks with pearl details, BENCH |
GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN
When classics meet: a white shirt under a slip or under a slinky matching set makes an entirely different look. Add a little more character to a slip dress and wrap an oversized white shirt around the waist. Don’t feel like showing a flash of upper body skin? Wear your white shirt under a teeny-weeny tube and leg-baring skirt combo.
On Gelai Orange slip dress, white asymmetrical shirt and white Pantone shirt, ZARA, Puka shell earrings, STRADIVARIUS, multi-colored chunky sneakers, COTTON ON. On Pat Pink tube and skirt matching set, STRADIVARIUS, “Don’t be salty” white shirt and red socks, BENCH, black ankle strap sandals with acrylic heels, CHARLES & KEITH |
